Xega III

Xega III is the third planet in the Xega system, which had once been home to the ancient Xegan civilization. In 2378, the Federation began a multi-decade archaeological expedition there, headed by Dr. Otto Von Toenkampf. His team discovered hundreds of ancient artifacts, including the famed Balancer Device so named because it was designed to return the biosphere of the dying planet back to normal.

The planets primary star went through a series of serious solar flares billions of yaers ago which brought the Xegan culture and species to an end. Although nominally a Class M world the planet boasted significant dangers including powerful surface winds at the planet's terminus. They were so powerful that the habitation module and work areas had to be protected by a specialized Atmospheric Force Field to deflect dirt dust and small stones that may be picked up by the winds. The devices also protected the habitation from wind damage.

There were very few native species remainign on the planet, most previously had been driven to extinction by the increased radiation. Those included the rodent-like Moonglider and several species of hardy insects. There were also several very resilient plants that remained.

In late 2408, the USS Rosenante arrived at Xega III to conduct the yearly medical and resuply of the Archeological survey team there. Among the supplies that were brought to the site were a new habitation module, food and medical supplies as well as a new Argo shuttlecraft and rover.

The planet orbits an orange sub-giant star.
