The Antiverse is a physical region that exists in an unknown state beyond the confines of the normal universe. This Antiverse, is representative of the opposite of the prime universe, and is believed to be the balancing counterpoint to all existence. Defining the Antiverse is difficult as normal detection methods have proven impossible.

The existence of such an aspect of cosmology can be detected only through indirect observation.

On Stardate 3087.6 the USS Enterprise NCC-1701, a Constitution Class starship, encountered the Antiverse while exploring a sector of space. The resulting incident was defined by Science Officer Spock as "a rip in the universe, where regular physical laws do not apply". This description was later dubbed the Alternative Factor.

In 2413, the USS Hades was called upon to investigate the disappearance of the USS Onyx. The wreckage was located and unknowingly it and later the Hades was affected by pockets of the antiverse that are believed to have been created by an interaction between the Warp drive of the starships and a pulse of energy emitted by the magnetar PX 1354. This interaction caused a striation of normal space, rending tears between the universe and the Antiverse.

One of the observed side affects of this encounter was the dilation of time centering around high-energy reactions such as matter/antimatter annihilations and nuclear decay. This was observed through a consistent creation of tachyons, suspected to have been created when the warp core of the Onyx was purged during their situation. The concept was forwarded that the reactions and processes had not stopped completely as it originally appeared, but that it had instead slowed to the point that the reaction could not power equipment or be detected.

Using data from the Enterprise's ship's logs, the Hades crew was able to render a crude map of the tears, which allowed them to escape.

Another abnormal side affect of the encounter was physiological. The mental capacities of the affected crew were bombarded with feelings of terror and fear. It is believed, although conjecturally, that the affect was a result of the affect of the area upon the biomagnetic fields generated by living creatures. This created certain chemical imbalances within the brain which prompted such emotional feelings. In many instances, hallucinations were present to those affected. The fight or flight response was also present among individuals with higher rated AQ (Aggressive Quotients). Apparently doses of Dopamine were helpful in staving off the most dangerous of the hallucinations and fears at least for a short time.

Once the ship was blasted free of the affected area, through the use of an antimatter torpedo, the ship's systems returned to normal as did any immediate physiological affects from the interaction.

The Antiverse was first seen in the USS Hades mission Sphere of Terror
