Lieutenant James Alexander is a complicated character to explain. In the early part of 2407 his political alliance was with the Doenitz Loyalist camp. He had managed to infiltrate the USS Champlain and was responsible for passing information via encrypted messages to the USS Wyvern. Eventually this information led to the first of two battles with the Wyvern.

In the first of these battles the Wyvern was forced to retreat when the Champlain managed to catch her off-guard despite the information provided by Alexander. The second battle took place at Ivor Prime. It was during this second battle that Captain Edward Wolfe and First officer Ullia Mason were both killed, in a surprise attack by the Wyvern.

By the time that the second battle took place, Alexander had become troubled by his political affiliations and had undergone a change of heart.

Through his actions, he beamed aboard a badly damaged Wyvern and managed to convince the acting captain Martin O'Shea to surrender the ship without further loss of life.

O'Shea eventually joined the 52nd Fleet, commanding the Wyvern in the Battle for Sector 001. The Wyvern sacrified herself for the defense of the Champlain during that battle. Without the change of heart and actions of this former spy, the Champlain would not have been evacuated prior to her destruction.

After a general court martial, Alexander was paroled and reduced in rank to Ensign. He currently serves at Starbase Geneva.
