A laser micrometer is a specialized instrument used for non-contact measurement and control in use aboard NX-class starships. (ENT: "Singularity")
The device is very efficient and is designed to take into account any variations in distance as a result of being used in a hand held model. This is done by combining an integrated motion sensor that measures the movement of the device itself and uses this information to calculate true distance.
