Technical Specifications for the USS Mithrandir

Nova Class - Technical Specifications Overview

During the late 2360s it became obvious that the operational life of the aging Oberth class was coming to an end. The solution was the Nova Class - a design intended to provide a platform for short-term planetary research and analysis after a region had been initially surveyed by larger explorer-type vessels. It was not designed for long-range or tactical missions, and the class specifications reflect that.

The Nova class has the capability to execute Federation defensive, cultural, scientific, and explorative policy in deep space or border territory and can also serve as a platform for the extension of Federation diplomacy and policy. It may also provide non-critical functions such as transport of personnel and cargo when necessary, extended aid, and short-range patrol, although given its size and weaponry these are not the optimum uses of the class.

Despite the small size and lack of amenities compared to larger, more 'luxurious' longer-range vessels, the Nova Class swiftly lost its status as a ‘little ship’. Its usefulness in making for more accurate missions to new areas of space, bringing back reams of data on individual systems to be disseminated amongst the fleets, has won it acclaim across the whole of Starfleet.

Although lightly armed compared to other modern ships, the Nova boasts impressive weaponry for its size. Its lack of speed (compared to its larger 'relatives') is more than made up for by its scientific capabilities. Double deflector dishes also provide added security when far from suitable repair facilities, as a single malfunctioning or damaged deflector will not prevent the ship from going to warp.

Thanks to its highly accurate sensors and computer systems the Nova is the perfect tool to send into barely-surveyed territory, its ability to 'micro survey' enabling it to make many discoveries not found in the initial 'large scale' surveys.

The work of the Nova class ships is important and the crews that serve on them know their worth and protect their reputations fiercely. Like the much-loved Oberth the class was designed to replace, the Nova has earned a favoured place in Starfleet lore and will continue to serve for many years yet to come.
