The Planet Nigli

Nigli is the home world of the Niglik and is located in the Beta Quadrant.

The planet is class M and is mineral rich. A high nitrogen and Oxygen atmosphere makes it a very good planet for botanical growth and the planet is known for it's temperate jungles in the summer and arctic forests in the winter. It also possesses a ver diverse biosphere.

The planet is the fourth planet from the solar body it orbits, and is just slightly iside the habitable zone of it's home star. It's very eliptical orbit brings it very close to both the outer edge of the stellar cold zone, and into the stellar hot zone as well. Thus the planet has a long and very cold winter as well as a very hot and humid summer. A strong magnetic field and a thick atmosphere prevents the planet's atmosphere from being stripped away by solar winds when it is closest to it's solar parent.

Life on this planet is very resilient and adapatable. This is caused by the two extremes of summer and winter seasons each of which end with a very short spring/fall growing season. The flora grows rapidly and is known to be aggressive in it's defense, using a variety of toxins, deterrents and clever tricks to insure it's continued survival.

Because of it's very elliptical orbit, it is believed that the planet was originally captured by the star it orbits rather than forming in the system naturally.

Intense solar activity is known to create a massive display of auroras throughout the skies of the planet. In some instances, a glowing trail of ionized atmosphere that has accelerated enough to escape the planets gravity trail behind the planet. This is known as the planet's crown and is most often seen when the planet is closest to the stellar hot zone.

Nigli possesses no satellites. There is a significant hydrosphere, although allmost all of it is transitory and either in the form of water vapor or subterranean resevoirs. It is only during the winter that the hydrosphere becomes clearly vibile in the form of ice sheets and glacial formations. The planet is smaller than earth by 1.23% and it's gravity is slighty less than that of the Earth.

Nigli was first mentioned in the USS Hades mission: A Rule of Conscience
