In military and civilian service organizations of many intelligent cultures, rank (sometimes denoted by rank insignia on uniforms) is how the jobs of different personnel are organized in a hierarchy of authority. One is promoted on their merit, skills and talent. Colour of division is marked on the uniform, with Red being Command, Yellow being support (Engineering, Tactical, Security,Operations, etc.), Blue being Medical, Counselling and Sciences, and Purple being Civilian Services.

Flag Officers

Fltadmcmd.pngThe Fleet Admiral is usually an Admiral that has been so decorated that he commands the entire fleet. The two fleet Admirals during the Federation Civil War were Admiral Robert LoDona and Admiral Doenitz.
Admcmd.pngAdmsupport.pngAdmmed.png Admsci.pngAdmsfi.pngAdmiral is a military rank, the equivalent of which is used by the service organizations of many civilizations. As a traditional grade, admiral is the most senior flag officer rank of a naval organization, senior to a captain. Admirals command fleets of ships, as opposed to captains commanding single ships or units.
Viceadmcmd.pngViceadmsupport.pngViceadmmed.pngViceadmsci.pngViceadmsfi.pngVice-admiral is a military rank, the equivalent of which is used by the service organizations of many civilizations. As a traditional grade, vice-admiral is a flag officer falling superior to a rear admiral and below a full admiral of a naval organization. This rank is used by the Federation Starfleet (as well as its predecessor the Earth Starfleet). Vice-admirals command entire fleets of vessels, divisions at Starfleet Headquarters, starbases and other senior positions in the fleet.
Rearadmcmd.pngRearadmsupport.pngRearadmmed.pngRearadmsci.pngRearAdmsfi.pngRear admiral is a flag officer rank used by naval organizations, traditionally between the grades of commodore and vice admiral. This rank is used by the Federation Starfleet (as well as its predecessor the Earth Starfleet).
Commcmd.pngCommsupport.pngCommmed.pngCommsci.pngCommsfi.pngCommodore is a naval rank, the equivalent of which is used by the service organizations of many civilizations. As a traditional grade, commodore is the most junior flag officer rank of a naval organization, under an admiral rank (usually under rear admiral) but senior to a captain. Commodores command groups of ships, as opposed to captains commanding single ships or units.

Line Officers

Captcmd.pngCaptsupport.pngCaptmed.pngCaptsci.pngCaptsfi.pngCaptciv.pngThe rank of Captain is the highest rank one in Starfleet can achieve and still be a line officer. Captain's usually are CO's of starships, but there are exceptions.
Cmdrcmd.pngCmdrsupport.pngCmdrmed.pngCmdrsci.pngCmdrsfi.pngCmdrciv.png Commander is a military rank, the equivalent of which is used by the service organizations of many civilizations. As a traditional naval grade, commander is the second most senior line officer rank, falling between Captain and Lieutenant in hierarchy, usually given to first officers and department heads, or the skippers of smaller vessels or leaders of other contingents of officers, such as on a Starbase. Proper naval parlance says that, even if a naval vessel is commanded by an officer whose rank is commander, that officer is still able to be referred to as a captain while on the deck of their own vessel.
Ltcmdrcmd.pngLtcmdrsupport.pngLtcmdrmed.pngLtcmdrsci.pngLtcmdrsfi.pngLtcmdrciv.pngLieutenant Commander is a military rank, the equivalent of which is used by the service organizations of many civilizations. A naval rank in a small number of Earth's ancient navies (such as the United States Navy), it is placed between ensign and full lieutenant. The rank is used primarily by the Federation Starfleet, although its Earth predecessor (from which it primarily takes its rank structure) may also have had this grade. It is unclear if the grade exists in other cultures' rank arrangements, although it may correspond to the Romulan rank of sublieutenant.
Enscmd.pngEnssupport.pngEnsmed.pngEnssci.pngEnssfi.pngEnsciv.pngEnsign is a military rank, the equivalent of which is used by the service organizations of many civilizations. As a traditional naval grade, Ensign is the most junior line officer rank below the lieutenant grades, usually immediately under lieutenant or lieutenant (Junior Grade). This naval rank is equivalent to the infantry rank of first lieutenant. An Ensign's primary duty is professional growth, both as a leader and as an occupational specialist. Ensigns are mentored by more senior officers as well as their (nominally) subordinate chief petty officers as part of their development as Starfleet leaders. As Ensigns prove themselves more capable, they are considered for promotion into the lieutenant tier. In the 24th century uniform scheme of Starfleet, Ensigns were once again indicated by one single rank pin.
Ensjgcmd.pngEnsjgsupport.pngEnsjgmed.pngEnsjgsci.pngEnsjgsfi.pngEnsjgciv.pngEnsign (Junior Grade) is a military rank, the equivalent of which is used by the service organizations of many civilizations. As a traditional naval grade, Ensign (junior grade) is the most junior line officer rank below the grade of Ensign. This is usually the first commisioned rank assigned to new officers (such as recent graduates of Starfleet Academy). This naval rank is equivalent to the infantry rank of second lieutenant, or the Romulan Star Empire's sublieutenant grade. An Ensign's primary duty is professional growth, both as a leader and as an occupational specialist. Ensigns are mentored by more senior officers as well as their (nominally) subordinate chief petty officers as part of their development as Starfleet leaders. As Ensigns prove themselves more capable, they are considered for promotion. In the 24th century uniform scheme of Starfleet, Ensigns were once again indicated by one single rank pin.

Cadets (All)

Cadet is a rank which is used at Starfleet Academy to denote students in training to become Starfleet officers. The rank was used in the mid 23rd century throughout the late 24th century. (TOS: "Whom Gods Destroy", Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, TNG: "The Game")

For a time, specifically in the 2280s, the rank of Cadet was superimposed (if not outright replaced) by the rank of Midshipman. (Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan)

Becoming a Starfleet cadet was a difficult process and required a significant amount of academic achievement while in high school. Academy entrance standards were particular high especially in scientific and math disciplines (such as Calculus). Cadets were also expected to maintain a satisfactory grade point average during their attendance at the Academy. Getting bad grades was grounds for a Cadet's revocation of appointment from the Academy, also known as "washing out". (TNG: "The First Duty", TNG: "Journey's End")

Starfleet Cadets were under the same uniform code of justice as Starfleet officers and were in turn subordinate to the orders of superiors. Cadets were also expected to show military courtesy and respect to senior commanders.
