Their son, Marcus, was 10 years old when Susan was born, and so although she was sent to live with her father's sister Luisa on Earth when the Dominion invaded, he was allowed to stay with his parents. Even after the defeat of the Dominion, Susan remained with Luisa (an archaeology professor) while her parents continued the fight for self-determination. By the time the Peace Accord was signed in 2388 and she could have returned home, Susan was 11 years old and in secondary education. It was decided not to disrupt her life by returning her to New Terra. Susan was bitterly disappointed at this decision, and felt as though her family was rejecting her. To forget her unhappiness she threw herself into her studies and graduated top of her class. She went on to study archaeology, but soon realised that she wanted more from life than the study of dead civilisations. She considered applying to the Maquis fleet, but eventually decided that she would have no place there that was not created by her parents and brother for her. Her major problem is her constant clashes with authority, and her temper, both of which she is learning to keep under control. She doesn't suffer fools gladly and can be blunt to the point of rudeness, but can be intensely loyal where she feels it is deserved. Her respect, like her loyalty, has to be earned.

During his Senior year (2405-2406) [[Dakota Lameart]] helped against Romulan forces that landed on [[Federation]] soil. Together with Instructor Jonathan Lake and some othere (engineering) cadets they had a plan of making a bio-wepon. Jonathan and Dakota needed 3 power-cells, and a piece of skin or DNA from a Romulan. In order to get the skin (DNA) Dakota and the instructor went through the Academy crawl-ways and captured two Romulans. They took the Romulans to an underground base (bunker) where Dakota and the engineering cadets worked on the bio-weapon. The weapon was finally deployed and destroyed all the Romulans, but injuring both the Instructor and Dakota. Finally, after some intensive rehab, Dakota was fit for duty and assigned to the [[USS Mystique]] as Ensign (jg), Asst. Tactical Chief.

When one first meets Matthew, one would be shocked if he acted eccentrically, he exudes an old-fashioned, authoritative aura. Even if he feels like the life of the party, others expect him to be the picture of industriousness, the boss figure with an impeccible sense of decorum and tradition. He may intimidate others with his intense demeanor, but they look to him for order. Negatively, he can come across as pessimistic and hypercritical. However, his true nature shows him to be a truth-seeker, and the best way for him to do this is to hit the road, talk to others and get some answers. Knowledge is key to him, since it fuels his broad-minded approach to life. Matthew is keenly interested in philosophy and religion, and he found that these disciplines aided his internal quest. At the end of the day, what he wants most is to know the meaning of life, and if he accomplishes this while feeling free and easy, all the better. He is a clear thinker and chooses to look at the big picture most of the time. He also likes it when others agree with his well-thought-out point of view. The alternative to this, for better or for worse, is that he can become argumentative and blunt. That's not to say that he is intransigent -- Matthew will listen to what others have to say. However, he can also be warm, loving, and generous in his affections, he inspires tremendous devotion and loyalty in his loved ones. This is good, since he would never settle for anything less! Christian's relationship with his brother is more like the relationship between twins. They seem to be, according to many people that they know, almost on the same wavelength with each other, sometimes even finishing each others' sentences, especially when they were younger. After their mother, [[Nara]] died, and Christian became old enough to understand his role in her death, he sank into a deep depression. Only his older brother was able to pull him out of it, and because of that, they have been friends ever since.

At first glance, Christian, he seems optimistic, lucky, and out going if slightly unrealistic at times, and he does come across to others as honest, direct and enthusiastic. Sometimes his frankness is a touch too upfront for more thin-skinned companions. In general other people are naturally drawn to his bouncy personality. He always looks for the silver linings and blessings in even the trickiest of situations. However, as one gets to know him, one sees that he is a communicative, detached, strongly independent personality with a witty, inventive mind, and a quirky outlook on life. Safety in numbers is often his motto since he is wary of too much intimacy. Large groups of people around make him much more relaxed than claustrophobic twosomes. His airy, chatty approach to life at times can make him appear emotionally cool or detached, but he prefers it that way. Close relationships do try his patience so he needs an independent mate who gives him space. He will keep his own friends even after he has committed himself to a long term relationship. Domesticity is not his ideal, since he loathes drudgery and is not inherently practical. Basically a hippie at heart, he cares little what others think and blithely walks his own path. He is a born radical, pioneer or rebel. Despite a really stubborn streak he is often seen as amazingly tolerant since he's humanitarian at heart and exceptionally good with friends. He has a real sense of the great brotherhood of mankind and wants to make a better society in which independence and freedom are the keynotes. At the age of about 1 month, his father's tour on [[Vulcan (planet)]] ended, and he moved to the [[USS Vanderbilt (NCC-71453)|USS ''Vanderbilt'' (NCC-71453)]], where his father served as first officer for about a year. In early 2382, he transferred to [[Earth]], where he had a position supervising the shipyards in geosynchronous orbit above the city of [[Boston]], [[Massachusetts]], [[Earth]].

Soon after moving to a suburb outside of [[Boston]], disaster struck the Brownlee family. In the midst of the great joy of the birth of [[Christian Soval Brownlee]], there was great sadness over the loss of [[Nara]], who had died in childbirth. Matthew, who was half-[[Vulcan]], suffered a complete [[emotional breakdown]] and never bothered to teach his young sons the practice of [[Vulcan]] [[Kolinahr]], a training that was essential to [[Vulcan emotional suppression]]. Because of this, the boys began to emulate the behaviors of others in the town of 200,000 in which they lived, the majority of whom were [[Human]].

</table>In school, Joran was always a popular and friendly student; a trend that continued through high school. When he graduated high school in [[2398]], he applied and was accepted to the [[Vulcan Science Academy]], where he wanted to study to pursue a carreer in [[exo-biology]]. This did not las very long, however. Many of the other students at the school made very insulting comments towards him, as he did not practice [[Kolinahr]] as the rest of them did. This resulted in many fights, the last of which resulted in a badly broken arm. After that incident, he had had enough, and dropped out of the [[Vulcan Science Academy]] in the spring of 2400. He applied to [[Starfleet Academy]] soon after dropping out, and was accepted for the start of the 2400-2401 school year.

Life at [[Starfleet Academy]] was much more pleasing to Joran than life at the [[Vulcan Science Academy]] had been. This may have had to do with the fact that his roommate was one [[Joseph Ross]], an old friend from his hometown, and the one Joran considered his best friend. Rooming with his best friend wasn't the only thing to look forward to for Joran however. In late [[2402]], Joran met and fell in love with then plebe cadet [[Rana Apar]]. This relationship has stood the test of time and they are now engaged and serving onboard the [[USS Paladin (NCC-52776)|USS ''Paladin'' (NCC-52776)]] together.

In the Academy, Joran majored in [[Sciences]] and minored in [[Stellar Navigation]]. His schedule was always very rigorous, as he wanted to catch up on the two years he though of as lost at the [[Vulcan Science Academy]]. However, his two years' experience at the [[Vulcan Science Academy]] are what guaranteed his acceptance.

Joran, during his time at [[Starfleet Academy]], began to come out from behind the protective shield he had made for himself during his time at the [[Vulcan Science Academy]]. It wasn't until after graduation in May [[2404]] that the process was finally finished. In September [[2404]], he entered Advanced Training at the [[Resorte Advanced Training Facility]]. Later in life, he described it as the most intense two years of his life. However, during this time, his mentor, [[Lieutenant Willie T. McGruff]] guided him along, and Joran has credited him as the one that finally pulled him out from behind his protective shield.

He graduated valedictorian from Advanced Training, and was promoted to the rank of [[Ensign|Ensign, junior grade]]. He didn't have much time to celebrate his graduation, and shipped out within 24 hours on the [[USS Windsor (NCC-85341)|USS ''Windsor'' (NCC-85341)]] to rendevouz with [[Starbase Geneva (NCC-85745)|Starbase ''Geneva'' (NCC-85745)]], which was en-route to its new location at the terminus of the [[Subspace River]].

Due to his keeping cool under pressure and expert handling of the situation he was presented with, he was promoted to [[Ensign|Ensign, senior grade]], and made the [[Chief Science Officer|Acting Chief Science Officer]] of [[Starbase Geneva (NCC-85745)|Starbase ''Geneva'' (NCC-85745)]]. But, the position didn't last long.

Due to the unpredictability of the new situation, [[Eva Straton|Straton]] felt it appropriate to appoint Joran to be her [[Third Officer]].While partolling near the borders of the [[Federation]], the [[USS Paladin (NCC-52776)|''Paladin'']] encountered an alien ship adrift in space. After weighing the risks, it was decided to send two [[away team]]s to the ship, which was wracked with [[spacial distorsions]]. After exploring the ship, they came into contact with aliens taking refuge on the ship; the [[Voradian]]s. With Joran's help, they restarted the computer and the [[Voradian]]s went on their way. Joran downloaded and translated the database, and found that the ship was called the [[QHL Sindilindelë|QHL ''Sindilindelë'']], and had been built centuries ago by a people that had been influence strongly by the [[El-Aurian]]s. In early 2382, he transferred to [[Earth]], where he had a position supervising the shipyards in geosynchronous orbit above the city of [[Boston]], [[Massachusetts]], [[Earth]].

Soon after moving to a suburb outside of [[Boston]], disaster struck the Brownlee family. In the midst of the great joy of the birth of [[Christian Soval Brownlee]], there was great sadness over the loss of [[Nara]], who had died in childbirth. Matthew, who was half-[[Vulcan]], suffered a complete [[emotional breakdown]] and never bothered to teach his young sons the practice of [[Vulcan]] [[Kolinahr]], a training that was essential to [[Vulcan emotional suppression]]. Because of this, the boys began to emulate the behaviors of others in the town of 200,000 in which they lived, the majority of whom were [[Human]].

This did not las very long, however. Many of the other students at the school made very insulting comments towards him, as he did not practice [[Kolinahr]] as the rest of them did. This resulted in many fights, the last of which resulted in a badly broken arm. After that incident, he had had enough, and dropped out of the [[Vulcan Science Academy]] in the spring of 2400. He applied to [[Starfleet Academy]] soon after dropping out, and was accepted for the start of the 2400-2401 school year.

Life at [[Starfleet Academy]] was much more pleasing to Joran than life at the [[Vulcan Science Academy]] had been. This may have had to do with the fact that his roommate was one [[Joseph Ross]], an old friend from his hometown, and the one Joran considered his best friend. Rooming with his best friend wasn't the only thing to look forward to for Joran however. In late [[2402]], Joran met and fell in love with then plebe cadet [[Rana Apar]]. This relationship has stood the test of time and they are now engaged and serving onboard the [[USS Paladin (NCC-52776)|USS ''Paladin'' (NCC-52776)]] together.

In the Academy, Joran majored in [[Sciences]] and minored in [[Stellar Navigation]]. His schedule was always very rigorous, as he wanted to catch up on the two years he though of as lost at the [[Vulcan Science Academy]]. However, his two years' experience at the [[Vulcan Science Academy]] are what guaranteed his acceptance.

Joran, during his time at [[Starfleet Academy]], began to come out from behind the protective shield he had made for himself during his time at the [[Vulcan Science Academy]]. It wasn't until after graduation in May [[2404]] that the process was finally finished. In September [[2404]], he entered Advanced Training at the [[Resorte Advanced Training Facility]]. Later in life, he described it as the most intense two years of his life. However, during this time, his mentor, [[Lieutenant Willie T. McGruff]] guided him along, and Joran has credited him as the one that finally pulled him out from behind his protective shield.

He graduated valedictorian from Advanced Training, and was promoted to the rank of [[Ensign|Ensign, junior grade]]. Due to the unpredictability of the new situation, [[Eva Straton|Straton]] felt it appropriate to appoint Joran to be her [[Third Officer]].While partolling near the borders of the [[Federation]], the [[USS Paladin (NCC-52776)|''Paladin'']] encountered an alien ship adrift in space. After weighing the risks, it was decided to send two [[away team]]s to the ship, which was wracked with [[spacial distorsions]]. After exploring the ship, they came into contact with aliens taking refuge on the ship; the [[Voradian]]s. With Joran's help, they restarted the computer and the [[Voradian]]s went on their way. Joran downloaded and translated the database, and found that the ship was called the [[QHL Sindilindelë|QHL ''Sindilindelë'']], and had been built centuries ago by a people that had been influence strongly by the [[El-Aurian]]s. The '''United Federation of Planets''', also referred to as the '''Federation''' or '''[[UFP]]''', is an interstellar nation composed of planetary governments and colonies. The various members of the Federation are organized under the unifying goals of universal liberty, equality, peaceful coexistence, trade, science, exploration, and mutual defense. Its territory encompasses at least several dozen sectors in both the Alpha and Beta Quadrants, spread across nearly 8,000 light-years of space. As of stardate 3219.8, the Federation was spread across more than 1,000 worlds. In 2268 there were at least 30 members, and by 2373, there were more than 150 members of the Federation, and over 1,000 semi-autonomous colonies. Many of the Federation member worlds were originally Human colonies, which is why Humans make up the majority of Starfleet personnel.
