Olen Rhinehart is chief counsellor and acting third officer aboard the [[USS Rosenante]] under the command of Captain [[Susan Rivers]]. He is a quiet and retiring man, much given to contemplation and reflection rather than action. His lifelong passion has been the study of philosophy, and by virtue of that, the acquisition of surer and more certain knowledge - not only of himself, but of the world around him. He also takes a keen interest in theology, which often seems anachronistic in these most humanist and secular of times. Although maintaining no particular religious faith himself, Rhinehart believes that the religious texts, and the ideas of theological scholars - thinkers such as St Thomas Aquinas, Subramuniyaswami and Nagarjuna - have much left to teach us yet.

==USS Champlain==

Rhinehart's first assignment was as a counsellor aboard the [[USS Champlain]], a modified Galaxy Class explorer. The ship's mission was to explore the largely unknown Beta Quadrant of the galaxy, in support of the 52nd Fleet's ongoing war against Admiral [[Doenitz]]. He made rendezvous with the vessel on Stardate 2407.02.24, ahead of its official launch. Its first task was to investigate the Federation colony Ivor Prime, which was believed to have been the target of a Borg attack some 30 years previously. It was to be assessed for suitability to house refugees from the conflict with Doenitz.

===Deep Space 5===

En route to Ivor Prime, the Champlain was diverted to the Doenitz-loyal space station [[Deep Space 5]], in order to capture it for Admiral [[LoDona]] and the 52nd Fleet. Following a successful infiltration, Rhinehart was able to convince the station commander, one Captain U'gaeth, to relinquish command and surrender with virtually no loss of life on either side.

As a result of his actions on this mission, Rhinehart received a promotion to Ensign (SG), and was awarded a Captain's Commendation.

===Ivor Prime===

Following the liberation of Deep Space 5, the Champlain's mission began in earnest - tasked with investigating the colony world of Ivor Prime as a potential home for refugees of the civil war. The planet's status had been unknown since contact was lost in the wake of a Borg attack in 2373, some 30 years ago. Wolfe and his crew feared the worst, but upon transporting to the surface, found the colony queerly deserted and undamaged. It was soon discovered that the colonists had been transported by one Dr Laura Schell, a senior theoretical physicist, to an incorporeal dimension in order to evade the Borg's impending attack. After Captain Wolfe was accidentally transported to the same void, the crew were able to return him, along with a number of the colonists, and left the colony in the hands of a reconstruction task force following in the Champlain's wake.

Rhinehart was left with some serious concerns over crew cohesion and communication efficiency following this mission, a trying experience for all concerned.

===The Hephaestus Principle===

A week after the Champlain left Ivor Prime, the crew were once more assembled on the bridge. An unexpected warp vessel had been discovered deep in uncharted space, and adding to the mystery, it exhibited a Federation warp signature. Wolfe explained that the chances of a coincidence were vanishingly small, which led Rhinehart to wonder if the vessel might be the Wyvern, the nebula class ship that seemed to be dogging them around the galaxy. Failing that, the infinitesimally tiny chance of coincidence all but ruled out the possibility that the vessel could be anything other than Starfleet, but Wolfe was insistent that the crew should prepare for first contact, a plan that seemed, on first impressions, to fly in the face of available evidence.

Rhinehart risked reproach by questioning the captain's reasoning publically, but was left dissatisfied by the exchange, and increasingly concerned over what he saw as the CO's abstracted state of mind and his mercurial command style. It seemed to Rhinehart that Wolfe had been subtly different since his return from the Ivor Prime void, and he worried deeply over what to do about it. In the meantime, the Champlain set course for the nearby planet of Irlix, assumed to be the source of the mysterious warp-capable vessel.

A day later, it appeared that perhaps Rhinehart had been correct in his concerns about the captain. Caught off guard by the Irlixians firing upon them, the Champlain was blind-sided by the USS Wyvern as she retreated, and was attacked mercilessly. But Wolfe seemed stricken with paralysis, almost catatonia. It cost him, and the ship, his life. A photon torpedo strike near the bridge left the command chair a devastated wreck, the explosion of which burned Rhinehart badly and hurled him bodily into the wall. For him, the mission was over.

===Beyond Vengeance/Crossroads===

While the Champlain battled the Wyvern, Rhinehart battled for his life. Fast action on the part of CPO Nathan Fuller and his team bridged the gap between life and death for the counsellor and brought him back from the brink. In sickbay, tended by Doctor Henna-star and Nurse Telstra, he was revived a mere matter of hours after his incapacitation, the worst of his physical wounds on the mend. Mentally though, it was another story. His concussion had triggered a traumatic retrograde amnesia that seemed oddly selective. Rhinehart could recall nothing of his identity, and nothing of the other crew members, yet retained his training and professional insights. This led him to conclude that his loss of recall had been, at least in part, psychological in nature. He concluded that he had dissociated, but without anything further to go on, was left floundering in a stranger's skin. Returning to [[Starbase Geneva]] for repairs and shore leave, the ship, and Rhinehart, passed to the command of Captain [[Susan Rivers]], in preparation for a combined fleet offensive aimed at bringing about the war's end.

===Do Not Go Gentle===

As the fleet prepared to merge and move on sector 001, Rhinehart eased back into his work uncertainly. Now chief of department, he had a small staff under his command and an enormous job to complete. As well as providing the standard crew evaluation required by the new captain, Rhinehart was tasked to conduct in-depth research into the confidential psychological files of Doenitz-loyal command staff, seeking information that could be exploited tactically. Initially perturbed at the ethical implications, he nevertheless agreed to the captain's request in light of the extraordinary attrition they were likely to face, and any possibility, no matter how slender, that it might be ameliorated.

The task occupied much of his department's time over the next three trying months. At the same time the crew was drilled relentlessly in preparation for their next mission: to act as the speartip for [[Task Force 19]]. It was a mission that would cause great ambivalence and dread in the amnesiac counsellor, not a warrior by any means. As the ship neared its destination, meanwhile, the existence of a certain black-market video clip came to his attention via his assistant [[Dorga Cha'Nooras]], and thus to the attention of the captain. The contents of the video proved to be the key that unlocked the morass of his suppressed memories, bringing them back to his consciousness in a deluge he could not decipher or decode. He began mind-melding therapy sessions with Lt. Dorga which helped him to reclaim the incoherent memories as his own.

As his therapy continued, he found himself forming an attachment to the capable Klingon/Vulcan counsellor that went deeper than mere professional courtesy, but in the immediacy of battle, he felt it inappropriate to share that fact. It was a mistake he would come to rue, and vow never to repeat. As the Champlain gathered impetus for the forthcoming fleet action, his mind and heart were occupied with little besides dread. He was not a warrior at heart, and found himself by turns resentful and petrified by the uncomfortable mould Starfleet was forcing him to occupy. His philosophical misgivings were many, but, like the rest of the senior staff, he suppressed them long enough to see the Champlain's part in the mission completed. It ended with the destruction of that vessel only a few short months after her launch, and the narrow escape of the bridge complement. Though the action resulted in victory for the 52nd Fleet, the cost of the conflict was too great to be so easily dismissed.

===Picking Up The Pieces===

Now stationed aboard the USS Hypatia, a long period of reflection and reassessment began for Rhinehart. Long and sober contemplation led him to the conclusion that, in light of the devastation the civil war had wrought, Starfleet was not an organisation his conscience would allow him to serve. His natural conclusion then, had been to resign his commission, and re-establish contact with his estranged mother, his one surviving relative. Unlike many others, however, who would struggle for months to ascertain the whereabouts and health of their families scattered across the galaxy's warzones, it was excruciatingly easy for Rhinehart to discover that his mother had in fact been killed during the 52nd's final onslaught on Earth, and his childhood home had been razed to the ground. He used his leave to journey there anyway, to inter his mother's remains and say his final goodbyes, and then to turn his mind to the question of 'what next?' He returned reluctantly to his duties, buying himself time to think things over. During this period, his application to complete an accredited PhD with the Institute of Tellarite Excellence (which had been working overtime to rebuild after the devastation it had suffered), was accepted. Once again, he made plans to resign his commission, with the aim of travelling to the institute in order to take on a quiet research and teaching role. It was not to be, however. Several attempts at drafting his resignation went uncompleted, and he spent many uncomfortable nights attempting to convince himself he was committed to the path he had chosen.

An eventual discussion with [[Susan Rivers]], confirmed to Rhinehart that his explorer's heart was not yet satiated. She, too, wanted no further part in any conflicts, internecine or otherwise, and was pulling every string she could to ensure her next assignment was one of peaceful exploration, in line with Starfleet's original charter. She hinted that she was optimistic about being offered command of a brand new, first-of-her-class ship, specifically tooled for deep black exploration, and added that she was building her command team, and many of the former Champlain crew were among her selections. On that proviso, she offered him the chief counsellor's position. In spite of his misgivings, he found himself accepting before he truly realised what he had done.

Contacting the institute, they agreed to postpone the teaching role indefinitely, but offered him the chance to complete his PhD remotely via subspace contact with his supervisor. Rhinehart accepted, and settled then into an uneasy, yet busy, anticipation of the many changes that were to come.

==USS Rosenante==

In early 2408, the crew officially stepped aboard their new vessel, the [[USS Rosenante]]. The ship resides on the bleeding edge of the state-of-the-art, and is a marked departure in almost every regard from the Champlain's modified Galaxy-class spaceframe. Within Starfleet, the Rosenante has come to respresent the renaissance of Starfleet's roots in the wake of the war, and it is hoped that its planned mission of exploration will demonstrate Starfleet's best intentions to the Federation as a whole.

===A Fine and Private Place===

Almost immediately upon his arrival on the new vessel, Rhinehart was blind-sided by yet another change. Last minute roster shuffles had removed Captain Rivers' first choice for third officer. Instead, the role was offered to him, along with a promotion to full lieutenant and several decorations for his part in the war's final, decisive battle. Perhaps sensing his moral ambivalence about Starfleet and his future within it, the role was offered on an 'acting' basis until he felt comfortable adopting the mantle completely. Preparations for Rhinehart's bridge command exam were hastily completed, and he passed the test with few apparent problems, although he himself felt it was one of the most difficult experiences of his career so far.

Meanwhile, the Rosenante took aboard a committee comprised of survivors of the Ivor Prime debacle, including the outspoken Dr [[Laura Schell]], who, since Rhinehart had last seen her, had received a nomination to overall leadership (pending full election) of that colony's survivors. In keeping with their mission of exploration, the Rosenante was to undertake a systematic survey of suitable class-M worlds as candidates for resettling the Ivor Prime colonists, and, ever mindful of the precarious PR position of Starfleet in the aftermath of the war, they traveled with [[Hal Stanza]], the award-winning FNN correspondent who had lionised the 52nd Fleet and won the admiration of many pre-eminent Starfleet officers with his report on [[The Final Flight of the Champlain|the final flight of the Champlain]].

After a brief launch ceremony, the Rosenante departed for the Optima system. En route however, they were diverted by a horrifying distress call, picked up during the early portion of Rhinehart's third-ever bridge watch.

==Hobbies==

Rhinehart is generally more interested in intellectual pursuits than physical. He is a quick study, and keenly interested in all branches of knowledge, although his specialities are philosophy, theology and psychology. He enjoys writing - although his relationship with his keyboard is sometimes fractious - and is currently working on a secret literary project in which he unburdens some of the angst he often feels towards himself. He is a connoiseur of tea, and spends inordinate amounts of time grooming his beard, of which he is justifiably proud. He is currently pursuing a psychology PhD by way of intermittent subspace contact with the Institute of Tellarite Excellence.

Socially, he feels he has missed the boat somewhat, in terms of cementing informal bonds of friendship with his crewmates, although it is apparent that he has earned the professional respect of most. Meanwhile, his romantic life continues be bumpy: After his on-again off-again frisson with Lt Cdr [[Brianna Frazier]] ended with her injury and subsequent abrupt transfer from the crew, he found himself growing closer to his assistant counsellor [[Dorga cha'Nooras]] following their mind-meld. The possibility of a relationship seemed nullified, however, when cha'Nooras was promoted to second officer of the [[USS Boudicca]] and transferred before Rhinehart could summon up the courage to share his feelings. As of this writing, he remains single.

Almost immediately upon his arrival on the new vessel, Rhinehart was blind-sided by yet another change. Last minute roster shuffles had removed Captain Rivers' first choice for third officer. Instead, the role was offered to him, along with a promotion to full lieutenant and several decorations for his part in the war's final, decisive battle. Perhaps sensing his moral ambivalence about Starfleet and his future within it, the role was offered on an 'acting' basis until he felt comfortable adopting the mantle completely. Preparations for Rhinehart's bridge command exam were hastily completed, and he passed the test with few apparent problems, although he himself felt it was one of the most difficult experiences of his career so far.

Meanwhile, the Rosenante took aboard a committee comprised of survivors of the Ivor Prime debacle, including the outspoken Dr [[Laura Schell]], who, since Rhinehart had last seen her, had received a nomination to overall leadership (pending full election) of that colony's survivors. In keeping with their mission of exploration, the Rosenante was to undertake a systematic survey of suitable class-M worlds as candidates for resettling the Ivor Prime colonists, and, ever mindful of the precarious PR position of Starfleet in the aftermath of the war, they traveled with [[Hal Stanza]], the award-winning FNN correspondent who had lionised the 52nd Fleet and won the admiration of many pre-eminent Starfleet officers with his report on [[The Final Flight of the Champlain|the final flight of the Champlain]].

After a brief launch ceremony, the Rosenante departed for the Optima system. En route however, they were diverted by a horrifying distress call, picked up during the early portion of Rhinehart's third-ever bridge watch.

==Hobbies==

Rhinehart is generally more interested in intellectual pursuits than physical. He is a quick study, and keenly interested in all branches of knowledge, although his specialities are philosophy, theology and psychology. He enjoys writing - although his relationship with his keyboard is sometimes fractious - and is currently working on a secret literary project in which he unburdens some of the angst he often feels towards himself. He is a connoiseur of tea, and spends inordinate amounts of time grooming his beard, of which he is justifiably proud. He is currently pursuing a psychology PhD by way of intermittent subspace contact with the Institute of Tellarite Excellence.

Socially, he feels he has missed the boat somewhat, in terms of cementing informal bonds of friendship with his crewmates, although it is apparent that he has earned the professional respect of most. Meanwhile, his romantic life continues be bumpy: After his on-again off-again frisson with Lt Cdr [[Brianna Frazier]] ended with her injury and subsequent abrupt transfer from the crew, he found himself growing closer to his assistant counsellor [[Dorga cha'Nooras]] following their mind-meld. The possibility of a relationship seemed nullified, however, when cha'Nooras was promoted to second officer of the [[USS Boudicca]] and transferred before Rhinehart could summon up the courage to share his feelings. As of this writing, he remains single.

Olen Rhinehart is chief counsellor and acting third officer aboard the [[USS Rosenante]] under the command of Captain [[Susan Rivers]]. He is a quiet and retiring man, much given to contemplation and reflection rather than action. His lifelong passion has been the study of philosophy, and by virtue of that, the acquisition of surer and more certain knowledge - not only of himself, but of the world around him. He also takes a keen interest in theology, which often seems anachronistic in these most humanist and secular of times. Although maintaining no particular religious faith himself, Rhinehart believes that the religious texts, and the ideas of theological scholars - thinkers such as St Thomas Aquinas, Subramuniyaswami and Nagarjuna - have much left to teach us yet.

==USS Champlain==

Rhinehart's first assignment was as a counsellor aboard the [[USS Champlain]], a modified Galaxy Class explorer. The ship's mission was to explore the largely unknown Beta Quadrant of the galaxy, in support of the 52nd Fleet's ongoing war against Admiral [[Doenitz]]. He made rendezvous with the vessel on Stardate 2407.02.24, ahead of its official launch. Its first task was to investigate the Federation colony Ivor Prime, which was believed to have been the target of a Borg attack some 30 years previously. It was to be assessed for suitability to house refugees from the conflict with Doenitz.

===Deep Space 5===

En route to Ivor Prime, the Champlain was diverted to the Doenitz-loyal space station [[Deep Space 5]], in order to capture it for Admiral [[LoDona]] and the 52nd Fleet. Following a successful infiltration, Rhinehart was able to convince the station commander, one Captain U'gaeth, to relinquish command and surrender with virtually no loss of life on either side.

As a result of his actions on this mission, Rhinehart received a promotion to Ensign (SG), and was awarded a Captain's Commendation.

===Ivor Prime===

Following the liberation of Deep Space 5, the Champlain's mission began in earnest - tasked with investigating the colony world of Ivor Prime as a potential home for refugees of the civil war. The planet's status had been unknown since contact was lost in the wake of a Borg attack in 2373, some 30 years ago. Wolfe and his crew feared the worst, but upon transporting to the surface, found the colony queerly deserted and undamaged. It was soon discovered that the colonists had been transported by one Dr Laura Schell, a senior theoretical physicist, to an incorporeal dimension in order to evade the Borg's impending attack. After Captain Wolfe was accidentally transported to the same void, the crew were able to return him, along with a number of the colonists, and left the colony in the hands of a reconstruction task force following in the Champlain's wake.

Rhinehart was left with some serious concerns over crew cohesion and communication efficiency following this mission, a trying experience for all concerned.

===The Hephaestus Principle===

A week after the Champlain left Ivor Prime, the crew were once more assembled on the bridge. An unexpected warp vessel had been discovered deep in uncharted space, and adding to the mystery, it exhibited a Federation warp signature. Wolfe explained that the chances of a coincidence were vanishingly small, which led Rhinehart to wonder if the vessel might be the Wyvern, the nebula class ship that seemed to be dogging them around the galaxy. Failing that, the infinitesimally tiny chance of coincidence all but ruled out the possibility that the vessel could be anything other than Starfleet, but Wolfe was insistent that the crew should prepare for first contact, a plan that seemed, on first impressions, to fly in the face of available evidence.

Rhinehart risked reproach by questioning the captain's reasoning publically, but was left dissatisfied by the exchange, and increasingly concerned over what he saw as the CO's abstracted state of mind and his mercurial command style. It seemed to Rhinehart that Wolfe had been subtly different since his return from the Ivor Prime void, and he worried deeply over what to do about it. In the meantime, the Champlain set course for the nearby planet of Irlix, assumed to be the source of the mysterious warp-capable vessel.

A day later, it appeared that perhaps Rhinehart had been correct in his concerns about the captain. Caught off guard by the Irlixians firing upon them, the Champlain was blind-sided by the USS Wyvern as she retreated, and was attacked mercilessly. But Wolfe seemed stricken with paralysis, almost catatonia. It cost him, and the ship, his life. A photon torpedo strike near the bridge left the command chair a devastated wreck, the explosion of which burned Rhinehart badly and hurled him bodily into the wall. For him, the mission was over.

===Beyond Vengeance/Crossroads===

While the Champlain battled the Wyvern, Rhinehart battled for his life. Fast action on the part of CPO Nathan Fuller and his team bridged the gap between life and death for the counsellor and brought him back from the brink. In sickbay, tended by Doctor Henna-star and Nurse Telstra, he was revived a mere matter of hours after his incapacitation, the worst of his physical wounds on the mend. Mentally though, it was another story. His concussion had triggered a traumatic retrograde amnesia that seemed oddly selective. Rhinehart could recall nothing of his identity, and nothing of the other crew members, yet retained his training and professional insights. This led him to conclude that his loss of recall had been, at least in part, psychological in nature. He concluded that he had dissociated, but without anything further to go on, was left floundering in a stranger's skin.

===Do Not Go Gentle===

As the fleet prepared to merge and move on sector 001, Rhinehart eased back into his work uncertainly. Now chief of department, he had a small staff under his command and an enormous job to complete. As well as providing the standard crew evaluation required by the new captain, Rhinehart was tasked to conduct in-depth research into the confidential psychological files of Doenitz-loyal command staff, seeking information that could be exploited tactically. Initially perturbed at the ethical implications, he nevertheless agreed to the captain's request in light of the extraordinary attrition they were likely to face, and any possibility, no matter how slender, that it might be ameliorated.

The task occupied much of his department's time over the next three trying months. At the same time the crew was drilled relentlessly in preparation for their next mission: to act as the speartip for [[Task Force 19]]. It was a mission that would cause great ambivalence and dread in the amnesiac counsellor, not a warrior by any means. As the ship neared its destination, meanwhile, the existence of a certain black-market video clip came to his attention via his assistant [[Dorga Cha'Nooras]], and thus to the attention of the captain. The contents of the video proved to be the key that unlocked the morass of his suppressed memories, bringing them back to his consciousness in a deluge he could not decipher or decode. He began mind-melding therapy sessions with Lt. Dorga which helped him to reclaim the incoherent memories as his own.

As his therapy continued, he found himself forming an attachment to the capable Klingon/Vulcan counsellor that went deeper than mere professional courtesy, but in the immediacy of battle, he felt it inappropriate to share that fact. It was a mistake he would come to rue, and vow never to repeat. As the Champlain gathered impetus for the forthcoming fleet action, his mind and heart were occupied with little besides dread. He was not a warrior at heart, and found himself by turns resentful and petrified by the uncomfortable mould Starfleet was forcing him to occupy. His philosophical misgivings were many, but, like the rest of the senior staff, he suppressed them long enough to see the Champlain's part in the mission completed. It ended with the destruction of that vessel only a few short months after her launch, and the narrow escape of the bridge complement. Though the action resulted in victory for the 52nd Fleet, the cost of the conflict was too great to be so easily dismissed.

===Picking Up The Pieces===

Now stationed aboard the USS Hypatia, a long period of reflection and reassessment began for Rhinehart. Long and sober contemplation led him to the conclusion that, in light of the devastation the civil war had wrought, Starfleet was not an organisation his conscience would allow him to serve. His natural conclusion then, had been to resign his commission, and re-establish contact with his estranged mother, his one surviving relative. Unlike many others, however, who would struggle for months to ascertain the whereabouts and health of their families scattered across the galaxy's warzones, it was excruciatingly easy for Rhinehart to discover that his mother had in fact been killed during the 52nd's final onslaught on Earth, and his childhood home had been razed to the ground. He used his leave to journey there anyway, to inter his mother's remains and say his final goodbyes, and then to turn his mind to the question of 'what next?' He returned reluctantly to his duties, buying himself time to think things over. During this period, his application to complete an accredited PhD with the Institute of Tellarite Excellence (which had been working overtime to rebuild after the devastation it had suffered), was accepted. Once again, he made plans to resign his commission, with the aim of travelling to the institute in order to take on a quiet research and teaching role. It was not to be, however. Several attempts at drafting his resignation went uncompleted, and he spent many uncomfortable nights attempting to convince himself he was committed to the path he had chosen.

An eventual discussion with [[Susan Rivers]], confirmed to Rhinehart that his explorer's heart was not yet satiated. She, too, wanted no further part in any conflicts, internecine or otherwise, and was pulling every string she could to ensure her next assignment was one of peaceful exploration, in line with Starfleet's original charter. She hinted that she was optimistic about being offered command of a brand new, first-of-her-class ship, specifically tooled for deep black exploration, and added that she was building her command team, and many of the former Champlain crew were among her selections. On that proviso, she offered him the chief counsellor's position. In spite of his misgivings, he found himself accepting before he truly realised what he had done.

Contacting the institute, they agreed to postpone the teaching role indefinitely, but offered him the chance to complete his PhD remotely via subspace contact with his supervisor. Rhinehart accepted, and settled then into an uneasy, yet busy, anticipation of the many changes that were to come.

''The modified Galaxy class vessel hangs suspended against a dusting of stars. Slowly the camera sweeps around her hull, a beautiful unbroken steadicam shot that is trademark Davok. The sheer bulk of this vessel, not often appreciated even by her crew, is apparent, from the tapered elegance of her saucer, to the ungainly vestigial warp nacelle she carries on her back like a mother turtle. In space.''

HAL STANZA (VO): The USS Champlain. Three months ago, an explorer under the authority of Starfleet's so-called seditionist [[52nd fleet]]. Yesterday, a fully-fanged ship of the line poised to form the tip of the spear that would breach the Mars Defence Perimeter. Today – merely a memory, along with dozens of her kind, and many of the brave souls that served aboard them. Gone, but not forgotten, a heroic footnote to the fleet action that may prove to be a turning point of Federation history. This... is their story.

INT – Ship's corridor, outside Ten Forward

''STANZA stands in the foreground, as he delivers his trademark narration, poker-face in place. Behind him, the usual bustle of shipboard activity, officers coming and going. Some notice the camera, most studiously avoid it.''

STANZA: Six months ago, war came home for [[Federation]] citizens, something nobody thought would ever happen again. The Federation has torn itself apart, planetary bombardments have brought untold devastation to worlds across the galaxy, and [[Starfleet]]'s very name is mud. But that, say the crew of this battleship, is all about to change.

INT – Federation Council chamber

''The grandiose central chamber of the Federation's legislature is austere and simple, for all its size, dominated by sleek, angular silver-grey surfaces. At the head of the room, [[Rodrigo Doenitz]] holds forth behind a podium, animated and intense. His speech is muted beneath Stanza's voice-over.''

STANZA (VO): President Doenitz calls them terrorists, traitors, pretenders to the Federation executive, and a cancer on the soul of Starfleet. According to his regime, they are the very reason for the current miserable state of our society, floundering under martial law and riven with strife these past months, setting back centuries of political progress. The 52nd fleet, meanwhile, insist that's all a lie, and they are the hot needle that will lance the boil of corruption and restore the Federation to its former glory. But for the people of the Federation, it's difficult to know just what to believe.

CUT TO:

INT – USS Champlain, Captain's Ready Room

CAPTION: Captain [[Susan Rivers]], Commanding Officer.

''A sharp-featured woman, brown-haired and serious, fills the screen. The camera makes a focal point of her pips of rank, underscoring her authority, which oozes from her words. Her eyes blaze as she speaks.''

RIVERS: History will be a better judge than you or I. I'm not going to sit here and pretend that you can always find clear space between our two positions. War - and particularly civil war - is a nasty, brutal business. No side can ever say they alone stand in the light and do no wrong. There's honour and dishonour on both sides. But - and this is a big but - we are fighting for freedom, as anachronistic as that sounds. Not just for ourselves but for the Federation. And I daresay there are those who disagree. The difference between us and Doenitz is they are free to do so here. Under Doenitz disagreement is a death sentence.

EXT – Mars Defence Perimeter

''Stock footage of the MDP filmed from extreme range. It has been used in countless news reports. A defence platform looms large, specks of shadow belonging to patrol ships passing across its surface.''

STANZA (VO): For the Champlain and her sister vessels of the 52nd then, it's destination: Earth. But before the Federation capital can be recaptured, they must contend with the [[Mars Defence Perimeter]]. It's been breached before, but it took a Borg flotilla to do it. This time, the odds are not in the attackers' favour. But even in the face of that, they remain sanguine.

INT – USS Champlain, Observation Lounge

''A handsome man of clear Mediterranean origin stares into the camera, speaking impassively. He is framed against the majestic vista of space glimpsed through the large windows.''

CAPTION: Lt Cdr [[Ahmed Ibn Salid]], First Officer

SALID: It's true that most of the simulations have been less than shining, but there have been a few that show promise. It is in that vein that we are undertaking this action. Additionally other military actions will be taking place at various other key locations in the quadrant to tie down any possible reinforcements that Doenitz may have had access to previously. I'd say that while everything is not as assured as I may like, there is an acceptable chance of success for the risk involved. If there was not. We wouldn't be undertaking such a risky maneuver.

RIVERS: In any battle, one's chances of survival depend on a number of factors. In something as big as this... I wouldn't put money on anyone I know in the fleet, and especially not on this ship, coming out alive.

''The camera lingers on her face as she stares at her unseen interrogator, punctuating the powerful statement.''

STANZA (VO): And barely a week later, we discovered for ourselves just how prophetic those words had been.

INT – Deck 10, outside Sickbay.

''All is flickering lights and chaos. Red Alert sirens are blaring, the camera is shaking crazily in spite of Davok's formidable efforts. Stanza is standing, bedraggled and looking the worse for wear.''

STANZA (shouting): It's been at least three hours now since we started our attack run on the MDP, and let me tell you, it's been the longest three hours of my life. As you can -

''He is interrupted by a large booming that echoes through the structure, followed by the creak of straining bulkheads. The picture tilts crazily and Stanza struggles to keep his balance. A moment later, his composure returns.''

STANZA: As you can see, it's chaos here. Sickbay is out of action, we know that much for sure. There have already been casualties, some of them bridge personnel, but the worst may be yet to come. There are plasma fires and hull breaches across the ship, but nobody can tell us the status of the mi-

''His words are again swallowed by a huge boom and this time the picture goes fuzzy as the camera bounces violently. It comes to rest on the face of a Vulcan, apparently unconscious.''

STANZA (off-camera): Dave?! Oh god! Can you hea-

''Stanza's voice is drowned again by the sudden exclamation from the PA system.''

RIVERS (VO): All hands, this is the Captain speaking. Abandon ship! All hands, abandon ship! This is an order. I say again, abandon ship!

''The camera moves and Stanza manages to get the lens pointed at his face. He seems to be trying to switch the machine off. A gash has opened up on his soot-smudged forehead, trickling blood over his features. He is frowning, attempting to get orientated, babbling senselessly.''

STANZA (off-camera): Oh god. Oh my god. Oh my fu-

INT – Escape Pod

''The pod is cramped with bodies. A sussurration of chatter fills the air, over the small sounds of sobs and the pained cries of the wounded. Stanza sits against a viewport showing the Champlain against the starry backdrop. Her hull is scorched and battered, the third nacelle utterly gone, drive plasma venting from the wound. It is ugly. The other occupants of the pod are shooting Stanza ugly glances, but he is oblivious, caught in a news-trance unlike anything he has experienced before. Phaser fire lights the pod's interior every now and then, and once or twice the coruscating glow of a photon torpedo glitters.''

STANZA (whispering): We're outside the ship now, inside an escape pod. I don't know what just happened but it looks like the Champlain has lost a nacelle. I'm not an expert, but I believe that's catastrophic. We were lucky enough to get out in time, but I don't know how many are still left aboard. We spotted some of the enemy ships actually opening fire on escape pods. Incredible. It's surely just a matter of time now befHOLY <bleep>.

''Before the screen whites out, there is the briefest glimpse of the Champlain's outline tearing itself to shreds. The pod erupts in screams and cries of disbelief. STANZA: It's now approximately 2130 Federation Standard Time, and we're just getting word that the fleet action is over, and it's victory for the 52nd. We're waiting for confirmation that Doenitz has officially offered his surrender, but we're reasonably certain that the worst is behind us. Only time will tell now what lies in store for the Federation in this post-war epoch. Victory hasn't come without a price though. The Champlain is lost with dozens, possibly hundreds of hands on board, along with unconfirmed numbers of other 52nd vessels. A costly offensive, then, but one that will surely enter the annals of Starfleet history.

''The room is as crowded as the cargo bay. The atmosphere seems strange, a volatile mix of relief, joy and sorrow. Animated chatter mingles with the sound of muted crying.''

STANZA (VO): Costly indeed. It will be weeks before the true toll can be tallied, but even as we try to make the best of it aboard this vessel, the USS Hypatia, there's a sense that the losses were not in vain, that our comrades died as heroes.

''A tumbled ruin of scorched rubble fills the screen, cracked plasticrete shot through with tortured rebar, still smoking days after the bombardment that levelled the city. It is an all too familiar glimpse of devastation on a massive scale. Mercifully, there are no body parts visible, but the occasional patch of dried blood points up the real carnage of the scene.''

STANZA (VO): For the citizens of Earth though, along with those of Tellar Prime, Betazed and Andoria, who finally claimed the victory will perhaps matter little. It will take time for the wounds of this senseless and bloody conflict to heal. Something the survivors of the conflict know all too well.

RIVERS: I could sit here and talk platitudes about not making omelettes without breaking eggs
but I'm not going to. It's about people dying - innocents along with the guilty. None of us have hands untainted by blood. And I, for one, expect to be held to account for my part in it and will do so willingly.

What I've done - what all of us have done - will stay with me the rest of my life. What enables me to sleep at night is the knowledge that if I had not taken those actions then things would be far, far worse and thousands, possibly millions, more lives would have been lost. Whether those actions were 'right' in some wonderful, blame free, holier-than-thou sense is not for me to judge.

We could stop fighting and we could disappear somewhere. They left behind their families and friends under the rule of a dictator, knowing full well that Doenitz would have no qualms about killing them in retaliation. They gave up their homeworld. They did it to do the right thing.

STANZA (VO): So, then, begins the tiring business of rebuilding. Not only rebuilding the homes and lives of those left bereaved and destitute by this incomparably difficult time; not only rebuilding the ideals and philosophies that allowed the Federation to flourish in relative peace for so long; but also rebuilding the trust that we once had in ourselves and in Starfleet to be the vanguard of that trust as we extend the hand of peaceful advancement to all in the galaxy that will take it. And for the crew of the Champlain too, it is a time for reflection and high emotions in the wake of her destruction.

He caught sight of the Vulcan's impassive gaze at his exuberant gesture and cracked up.

Olen Rhinehart is chief counsellor and acting third officer aboard the [[USS Rosenante]] under the command of Captain [[Susan Rivers]]. He is a quiet and retiring man, much given to contemplation and reflection rather than action. His lifelong passion has been the study of philosophy, and by virtue of that, the acquisition of surer and more certain knowledge - not only of himself, but of the world around him. He also takes a keen interest in theology, which often seems anachronistic in these most humanist and secular of times. Although maintaining no particular religious faith himself, Rhinehart believes that the religious texts, and the ideas of theological scholars - thinkers such as St Thomas Aquinas, Subramuniyaswami and Nagarjuna - have much left to teach us yet.

==USS Champlain==

Rhinehart's first assignment was as a counsellor aboard the [[USS Champlain]], a modified Galaxy Class explorer. The ship's mission was to explore the largely unknown Beta Quadrant of the galaxy, in support of the 52nd Fleet's ongoing war against Admiral [[Doenitz]]. He made rendezvous with the vessel on Stardate 2407.02.24, ahead of its official launch. Its first task was to investigate the Federation colony Ivor Prime, which was believed to have been the target of a Borg attack some 30 years previously. It was to be assessed for suitability to house refugees from the conflict with Doenitz.

===Deep Space 5===

En route to Ivor Prime, the Champlain was diverted to the Doenitz-loyal space station [[Deep Space 5]], in order to capture it for Admiral [[LoDona]] and the 52nd Fleet. Following a successful infiltration, Rhinehart was able to convince the station commander, one Captain U'gaeth, to relinquish command and surrender with virtually no loss of life on either side.

As a result of his actions on this mission, Rhinehart received a promotion to Ensign (SG), and was awarded a Captain's Commendation.

===Ivor Prime===

Following the liberation of Deep Space 5, the Champlain's mission began in earnest - tasked with investigating the colony world of Ivor Prime as a potential home for refugees of the civil war. The planet's status had been unknown since contact was lost in the wake of a Borg attack in 2373, some 30 years ago. Wolfe and his crew feared the worst, but upon transporting to the surface, found the colony queerly deserted and undamaged. It was soon discovered that the colonists had been transported by one Dr Laura Schell, a senior theoretical physicist, to an incorporeal dimension in order to evade the Borg's impending attack. After Captain Wolfe was accidentally transported to the same void, the crew were able to return him, along with a number of the colonists, and left the colony in the hands of a reconstruction task force following in the Champlain's wake.

Rhinehart was left with some serious concerns over crew cohesion and communication efficiency following this mission, a trying experience for all concerned.

===The Hephaestus Principle===

A week after the Champlain left Ivor Prime, the crew were once more assembled on the bridge. An unexpected warp vessel had been discovered deep in uncharted space, and adding to the mystery, it exhibited a Federation warp signature. Wolfe explained that the chances of a coincidence were vanishingly small, which led Rhinehart to wonder if the vessel might be the Wyvern, the nebula class ship that seemed to be dogging them around the galaxy. Failing that, the infinitesimally tiny chance of coincidence all but ruled out the possibility that the vessel could be anything other than Starfleet, but Wolfe was insistent that the crew should prepare for first contact, a plan that seemed, on first impressions, to fly in the face of available evidence.

Rhinehart risked reproach by questioning the captain's reasoning publically, but was left dissatisfied by the exchange, and increasingly concerned over what he saw as the CO's abstracted state of mind and his mercurial command style. It seemed to Rhinehart that Wolfe had been subtly different since his return from the Ivor Prime void, and he worried deeply over what to do about it. In the meantime, the Champlain set course for the nearby planet of Irlix, assumed to be the source of the mysterious warp-capable vessel.

A day later, it appeared that perhaps Rhinehart had been correct in his concerns about the captain. Caught off guard by the Irlixians firing upon them, the Champlain was blind-sided by the USS Wyvern as she retreated, and was attacked mercilessly. But Wolfe seemed stricken with paralysis, almost catatonia. It cost him, and the ship, his life. A photon torpedo strike near the bridge left the command chair a devastated wreck, the explosion of which burned Rhinehart badly and hurled him bodily into the wall. For him, the mission was over.

===Beyond Vengeance/Crossroads===

While the Champlain battled the Wyvern, Rhinehart battled for his life. Fast action on the part of CPO Nathan Fuller and his team bridged the gap between life and death for the counsellor and brought him back from the brink. In sickbay, tended by Doctor Henna-star and Nurse Telstra, he was revived a mere matter of hours after his incapacitation, the worst of his physical wounds on the mend. Mentally though, it was another story. His concussion had triggered a traumatic retrograde amnesia that seemed oddly selective. Rhinehart could recall nothing of his identity, and nothing of the other crew members, yet retained his training and professional insights. This led him to conclude that his loss of recall had been, at least in part, psychological in nature. He concluded that he had dissociated, but without anything further to go on, was left floundering in a stranger's skin.

===Do Not Go Gentle===

As the fleet prepared to merge and move on sector 001, Rhinehart eased back into his work uncertainly. Now chief of department, he had a small staff under his command and an enormous job to complete. As well as providing the standard crew evaluation required by the new captain, Rhinehart was tasked to conduct in-depth research into the confidential psychological files of Doenitz-loyal command staff, seeking information that could be exploited tactically. Initially perturbed at the ethical implications, he nevertheless agreed to the captain's request in light of the extraordinary attrition they were likely to face, and any possibility, no matter how slender, that it might be ameliorated.

The task occupied much of his department's time over the next three trying months. At the same time the crew was drilled relentlessly in preparation for their next mission: to act as the speartip for [[Task Force 19]]. It was a mission that would cause great ambivalence and dread in the amnesiac counsellor, not a warrior by any means. As the ship neared its destination, meanwhile, the existence of a certain black-market video clip came to his attention via his assistant [[Dorga Cha'Nooras]], and thus to the attention of the captain. The contents of the video proved to be the key that unlocked the morass of his suppressed memories, bringing them back to his consciousness in a deluge he could not decipher or decode. He began mind-melding therapy sessions with Lt. Dorga which helped him to reclaim the incoherent memories as his own.

As his therapy continued, he found himself forming an attachment to the capable Klingon/Vulcan counsellor that went deeper than mere professional courtesy, but in the immediacy of battle, he felt it inappropriate to share that fact. It was a mistake he would come to rue, and vow never to repeat. As the Champlain gathered impetus for the forthcoming fleet action, his mind and heart were occupied with little besides dread. He was not a warrior at heart, and found himself by turns resentful and petrified by the uncomfortable mould Starfleet was forcing him to occupy. His philosophical misgivings were many, but, like the rest of the senior staff, he suppressed them long enough to see the Champlain's part in the mission completed. It ended with the destruction of that vessel only a few short months after her launch, and the narrow escape of the bridge complement. Though the action resulted in victory for the 52nd Fleet, the cost of the conflict was too great to be so easily dismissed.

===Picking Up The Pieces===

Now stationed aboard the USS Hypatia, a long period of reflection and reassessment began for Rhinehart. Long and sober contemplation led him to the conclusion that, in light of the devastation the civil war had wrought, Starfleet was not an organisation his conscience would allow him to serve. His natural conclusion then, had been to resign his commission, and re-establish contact with his estranged mother, his one surviving relative. Unlike many others, however, who would struggle for months to ascertain the whereabouts and health of their families scattered across the galaxy's warzones, it was excruciatingly easy for Rhinehart to discover that his mother had in fact been killed during the 52nd's final onslaught on Earth, and his childhood home had been razed to the ground. He used his leave to journey there anyway, to inter his mother's remains and say his final goodbyes, and then to turn his mind to the question of 'what next?' He returned reluctantly to his duties, buying himself time to think things over. During this period, his application to complete an accredited PhD with the Institute of Tellarite Excellence (which had been working overtime to rebuild after the devastation it had suffered), was accepted. Once again, he made plans to resign his commission, with the aim of travelling to the institute in order to take on a quiet research and teaching role. It was not to be, however. Several attempts at drafting his resignation went uncompleted, and he spent many uncomfortable nights attempting to convince himself he was committed to the path he had chosen.

An eventual discussion with [[Susan Rivers]], confirmed to Rhinehart that his explorer's heart was not yet satiated. She, too, wanted no further part in any conflicts, internecine or otherwise, and was pulling every string she could to ensure her next assignment was one of peaceful exploration, in line with Starfleet's original charter. She hinted that she was optimistic about being offered command of a brand new, first-of-her-class ship, specifically tooled for deep black exploration, and added that she was building her command team, and many of the former Champlain crew were among her selections. On that proviso, she offered him the chief counsellor's position. In spite of his misgivings, he found himself accepting before he truly realised what he had done.

Contacting the institute, they agreed to postpone the teaching role indefinitely, but offered him the chance to complete his PhD remotely via subspace contact with his supervisor. Rhinehart accepted, and settled then into an uneasy, yet busy, anticipation of the many changes that were to come.

==USS Rosenante==

In early 2408, the crew officially stepped aboard their new vessel, the [[USS Rosenante]]. The ship resides on the bleeding edge of the state-of-the-art, and is a marked departure in almost every regard from the Champlain's modified Galaxy-class spaceframe. Within Starfleet, the Rosenante has come to respresent the renaissance of Starfleet's roots in the wake of the war, and it is hoped that its planned mission of exploration will demonstrate Starfleet's best intentions to the Federation as a whole.

===A Fine and Private Place===

Almost immediately upon his arrival on the new vessel, Rhinehart was blind-sided by yet another change. Last minute roster shuffles had removed Captain Rivers' first choice for third officer. Instead, the role was offered to him. Perhaps sensing his ambivalence about Starfleet and his future within it, the role was offered on an 'acting' basis until he felt comfortable adopting the mantle completely. Preparations for Rhinehart's bridge command exam were hastily completed, and he passed the test with few apparent problems, although he himself felt it was one of the most difficult experiences of his career so far.

Meanwhile, the Rosenante took aboard a committee comprised of survivors of the Ivor Prime debacle, including the outspoken Dr [[Laura Schell]], who, since Rhinehart had last seen her, had received a nomination to overall leadership (pending full election) of that colony's survivors. In keeping with their mission of exploration, the Rosenante was to undertake a systematic survey of suitable class-M worlds as candidates for resettling the Ivor Prime colonists, and, ever mindful of the precarious PR position of Starfleet in the aftermath of the war, they traveled with [[Hal Stanza]], the award-winning FNN correspondent who had lionised the 52nd Fleet and won the admiration of many pre-eminent Starfleet officers with his report on [[the final flight of the Champlain]].

After a brief launch ceremony, the Rosenante departed for the Optima system. En route however, they were diverted by a horrifying distress call, picked up during the early portion of Rhinehart's third-ever bridge watch.

==Hobbies==

Rhinehart is generally more interested in intellectual pursuits than physical. He is a quick study, and keenly interested in all branches of knowledge, although his specialities are philosophy, theology and psychology. He enjoys writing - although his relationship with his keyboard is sometimes fractious - and is currently working on a secret literary project in which he unburdens some of the angst he often feels towards himself. He is a connoiseur of tea, and spends inordinate amounts of time grooming his beard, of which he is justifiably proud. He is currently pursuing a psychology PhD by way of intermittent subspace contact with the Institute of Tellarite Excellence.

Socially, he feels he has missed the boat somewhat, in terms of cementing informal bonds of friendship with his crewmates, although it is apparent that he has earned the professional respect of most. Meanwhile, his romantic life continues be bumpy: After his on-again off-again frisson with Lt Cdr [[Brianna Frazier]] ended with her injury and subsequent abrupt transfer from the crew, he found himself growing closer to his assistant counsellor [[Dorga cha'Nooras]] following their mind-meld. The possibility of a relationship seemed nullified, however, when cha'Nooras was promoted to second officer of the [[USS Boudicca]] and transferred before Rhinehart could summon up the courage to share his feelings. As of this writing, he remains single.

The USS Champlain is dispatched to the area of the Typhon Expanse to investigate [[Ivor Prime]].

Ivor Prime was a former Federation colony destroyed by the Borg in 2373. The former colony is to be surveyed and a report on the suitability for recolonization is to be sent in to Admiral Lodona. As this is on the fringes of areas of Borg sightings, as well as being in an area strategically important to Admiral Doenitz, the danger is high.

Following a successful infiltration by Ensign Frazier and her team, Counsellor Rhinehart was able to gain access to the command module, and convince the station commander Captain U'Gaeth to relinquish command without further bloodshed.

Following the liberation of Deep Space 5, the Champlain's mission began in earnest - tasked with investigating the colony world of Ivor Prime as a potential home for refugees of the civil war. The planet's status had been unknown since contact was lost in the wake of a Borg attack in 2373, some 30 years ago. Wolfe and his crew were anticipating a grim and disturbing scene, but upon transporting to the surface, found the colony queerly deserted and undamaged. It was soon discovered that the colonists had been transported by one [[Dr Laura Schell]], a senior theoretical physicist, to an incorporeal dimension in order to evade the Borg's impending attack. After Captain Wolfe was accidentally transported to the same void, the crew were able to return him, along with a number of the colonists, and left the colony in the hands of a reconstruction task force following in the Champlain's wake.

====The Hephaestus Principle====

A week after the Champlain left Ivor Prime, the crew were once more assembled on the bridge. An unexpected warp vessel had been discovered deep in uncharted space, and adding to the mystery, it exhibited a Federation warp signature. The Champlain set course for the nearby planet of Irlix, assumed to be the source of the mysterious warp-capable vessel, and began to plan for two simultaneous operations, a first contact mission, and a covert investigation of the Irlixian acquisition of warp technology.

A day later, however, the mission was in tatters. Caught off guard by the Irlixians firing upon them, the Champlain was blind-sided as she retreated by the cloaked USS Wyvern waiting in ambush. The Wyvern pressed the attack mercilessly. But in that moment, Wolfe seemed stricken with paralysis, almost catatonia. It cost him, and the ship, his life. A photon torpedo strike near the bridge left the command chair a devastated wreck, the explosion of which claimed the lives of several other senior personnel and left Counsellot Rhinehart badly burned.

Thanks to quick thinking by Lt Frazier and the surviving crew members, the dire situation was rescued, and the Wyvern was disabled. A boarding party led by Lt Janeway was able to negotiate the surrender of the Doenitz crew, and bring the nebula-class home to Geneva as a trophy ship.

The Champlain's first voyage, barely a month in length, had come to a noble, if tragic end.

A small team led by Captain Edward Wolfe, and including myself, was tasked with the liberation of space station Deep Space 5 from the command of Captain U'Gaeth, who had declared himself loyal to Doenitz. My role on the team was that of negotiator, and my mission profile was to facilitate the handover of the station and U'Gaeth's surrender with a minimum of bloodshed.

We were to infiltrate the station covertly, and to that end, our shuttlecraft was disguised as one of the station's own, heavily damaged and in need of assistance. Ensigns Frazier and Sullivan were to be beamed aboard on approach, exploiting a small shield flaw, and disable the station's shields entirely, allowing the shuttlecraft to dock with the station. From there, Frazier and Sullivan were to make contact with the station's FO, Anne Tilden - a LoDona loyalist - and support her in taking command of the station.

[[image:ugaeth.png|thumb|right|'''Captain U'Gaeth''']]Myself, Captain Wolfe and Ensign LaQua were to covertly capture the station's communications centre, allowing LaQua to scramble the universal translators, effectively neutralising the ability of station security to co-ordinate efforts against us. From there we were to proceed to the command module and persuade the Andorian Captain U'Gaeth to stand down and allow us to take him into custody.

With this aim in mind, I researched and compiled a dossier of media coverage, eyewitness accounts and 52nd Fleet reports detailing the genocide committed by Admiral Doenitz – paying particular attention to his sacking of Andoria, Captain U'Gaeth's homeworld, and capital of the Andorian Empire.

My plan was to use this material to undermine U'Gaeth's loyalty to Doenitz by confronting him with the horror of what had happened to his people, and then guarantee the safety of his family in exchange for his peaceful co-operation.

We made our way to the communications suite without incident, leading us to believe that we had not yet been discovered. However, as soon as we were inside, the doors were sealed, trapping us, and toxic gas was pumped into the room through the ventilation ducts. While Ensign LaQua worked on the translators, I was ordered by Captain Wolfe to attempt to plug the vents while he tried to open the door. I improvised a method of blocking the vents using bandages from an emergency medical kit, but picked up an injury in the process. Ensign LaQua succeeded in disrupting communications, and Captain Wolfe abandoned efforts to open the door, since security forces had been dispatched to our location. Instead we made our escape into the station's Jefferies tubes. I was forced to utilise emergency painkillers in order to continue and not jeapordise the mission.

After a lengthy climb, we found ourselves at the command module where LoDona-loyal Fifth Columnists were in a protracted firefight with U'Gaeth's forces, having tipped their hand. Pinned down by phaser fire, we joined the battle - until I spotted U'Gaeth attempting to escape to a turbolift. Assisted by a Fifth Columnist, I was able to stun him and bring him to cover.

Upon reviving him, Captain U'Gaeth was initially hostile and refused to co-operate. However, once he was shown proof of Doenitz's crimes against sentience, he was quickly pacified. At this point, I became aware of the price that my plan had exacted – we had taken the station with a minimum of bloodshed, but U'Gaeth's will was utterly, perhaps irrevocably, broken.

There, the stress of the mission and the pain of my injury quickly overwhelmed me and I passed out. Upon waking in the Champlain's sickbay, I learned that I had suffered a severe allergic reaction to the emergency painkillers I had used. I also learned that the Champlain had been involved in a protracted stand-off with the Doenitz-loyal [[USS Wyvern]]. However, details of this encounter remain unknown to me at this juncture.

The USS Champlain is dispatched to the area of the Typhon Expanse to investigate [[Ivor Prime]].

Ivor Prime was a former Federation colony destroyed by the Borg in 2373. The former colony is to be surveyed and a report on the suitability for recolonization is to be sent in to Admiral Lodona. As this is on the fringes of areas of Borg sightings, as well as being in an area strategically important to Admiral Doenitz, the danger is high.

A small away team comprised of Ensigns [[Derrick LaQua]], SO; [[Olen Rhinehart]], Couns; [[T’Larah Sullivan]], ATAC/ASC; and [[Brianna Frazier]]; Ops, and led by Captain [[Edward Wolfe]], has been dispatched on a classified mission to secure the strategically important DS5 for Lodona’s 52nd Fleet. The objective is infiltrate the station, and then to convince its Andorian commander, Captain U'gaeth, a Doenitz loyalist, to step down. He will be replaced by the station’s First Officer, who is aligned with Lodona. The specially modified, moderately disguised shuttle in which the team is approaching the station is also carrying weapons for Lodona’s forces.

The mission appears fairly simple. If all goes as planned, the takeover will be bloodless. The team is as well-prepared as possible, but with the exception of Captain Wolfe, they are all green. Wolfe is more aware than the rest of his fresh team how a simple seeming mission can go awry.

A small team led by Captain Edward Wolfe, and including myself, was tasked with the liberation of space station Deep Space 5 from the command of Captain U'Gaeth, who had declared himself loyal to Doenitz. My role on the team was that of negotiator, and my mission profile was to facilitate the handover of the station and U'Gaeth's surrender with a minimum of bloodshed.

We were to infiltrate the station covertly, and to that end, our shuttlecraft was disguised as one of the station's own, heavily damaged and in need of assistance. Ensigns Frazier and Sullivan were to be beamed aboard on approach, exploiting a small shield flaw, and disable the station's shields entirely, allowing the shuttlecraft to dock with the station. From there, Frazier and Sullivan were to make contact with the station's FO, Anne Tilden - a LoDona loyalist - and support her in taking command of the station.

From there we were to proceed to the command module and persuade the Andorian Captain U'Gaeth to stand down and allow us to take him into custody.

With this aim in mind, I researched and compiled a dossier of media coverage, eyewitness accounts and 52nd Fleet reports detailing the genocide committed by Admiral Doenitz – paying particular attention to his sacking of Andoria, Captain U'Gaeth's homeworld, and capital of the Andorian Empire.

My plan was to use this material to undermine U'Gaeth's loyalty to Doenitz by confronting him with the horror of what had happened to his people, and then guarantee the safety of his family in exchange for his peaceful co-operation.

We made our way to the communications suite without incident, leading us to believe that we had not yet been discovered. However, as soon as we were inside, the doors were sealed, trapping us, and toxic gas was pumped into the room through the ventilation ducts. While Ensign LaQua worked on the translators, I was ordered by Captain Wolfe to attempt to plug the vents while he tried to open the door. I improvised a method of blocking the vents using bandages from an emergency medical kit, but picked up an injury in the process. Ensign LaQua succeeded in disrupting communications, and Captain Wolfe abandoned efforts to open the door, since security forces had been dispatched to our location. Instead we made our escape into the station's Jefferies tubes. I was forced to utilise emergency painkillers in order to continue and not jeapordise the mission.

After a lengthy climb, we found ourselves at the command module where LoDona-loyal Fifth Columnists were in a protracted firefight with U'Gaeth's forces, having tipped their hand. Pinned down by phaser fire, we joined the battle - until I spotted U'Gaeth attempting to escape to a turbolift. Assisted by a Fifth Columnist, I was able to stun him and bring him to cover.

Upon reviving him, Captain U'Gaeth was initially hostile and refused to co-operate. However, once he was shown proof of Doenitz's crimes against sentience, he was quickly pacified. At this point, I became aware of the price that my plan had exacted – we had taken the station with a minimum of bloodshed, but U'Gaeth's will was utterly, perhaps irrevocably, broken.

I also learned that the Champlain had been involved in a protracted stand-off with the Doenitz-loyal [[USS Wyvern]]. However, details of this encounter remain unknown to me at this juncture.

After spending a week getting the ship and crew ready for their mission, and ironing the bugs out of the new ship, it is finally ready to unveil the mission...

The USS Champlain is dispatched to the area of the Typhon Expanse to investigate [[Ivor Prime]].

Ivor Prime was a former Federation colony destroyed by the Borg in 2373. The former colony is to be surveyed and a report on the suitability for recolonization is to be sent in to Admiral Lodona. As this is on the fringes of areas of Borg sightings, as well as being in an area strategically important to Admiral Doenitz, the danger is high.

En route to Ivor Prime, the Champlain found itself diverted to take [[Deep Space 5]] for Lodona.

A small away team comprised of Ensigns [[Derrick LaQua]], SO; [[Olen Rhinehart]], Couns; [[T’Larah Sullivan]], ATAC/ASC; and [[Brianna Frazier]]; Ops, and led by Captain [[Edward Wolfe]], has been dispatched on a classified mission to secure the strategically important DS5 for Lodona’s 52nd Fleet. The objective is infiltrate the station, and then to convince its Andorian commander, Captain U'gaeth, a Doenitz loyalist, to step down. He will be replaced by the station’s First Officer, who is aligned with Lodona. The specially modified, moderately disguised shuttle in which the team is approaching the station is also carrying weapons for Lodona’s forces.

The mission appears fairly simple. If all goes as planned, the takeover will be bloodless. The team is as well-prepared as possible, but with the exception of Captain Wolfe, they are all green. Wolfe is more aware than the rest of his fresh team how a simple seeming mission can go awry.

A small team led by Captain Edward Wolfe, and including myself, was tasked with the liberation of space station Deep Space 5 from the command of Captain U'Gaeth, who had declared himself loyal to Doenitz. My role on the team was that of negotiator, and my mission profile was to facilitate the handover of the station and U'Gaeth's surrender with a minimum of bloodshed.

We were to infiltrate the station covertly, and to that end, our shuttlecraft was disguised as one of the station's own, heavily damaged and in need of assistance. Ensigns Frazier and Sullivan were to be beamed aboard on approach, exploiting a small shield flaw, allowing the shuttlecraft to dock with the station. From there, Frazier and Sullivan were to make contact with the station's FO, Anne Tilden - a LoDona loyalist - and support her in taking command of the station.

From there we were to proceed to the command module and persuade the Andorian Captain U'Gaeth to stand down and allow us to take him into custody.

With this aim in mind, I researched and compiled a dossier of media coverage, eyewitness accounts and 52nd Fleet reports detailing the genocide committed by Admiral Doenitz – paying particular attention to his sacking of Andoria, Captain U'Gaeth's homeworld, and capital of the Andorian Empire.

My plan was to use this material to undermine U'Gaeth's loyalty to Doenitz by confronting him with the horror of what had happened to his people, and then guarantee the safety of his family in exchange for his peaceful co-operation.

We made our way to the communications suite without incident, leading us to believe that we had not yet been discovered. However, as soon as we were inside, the doors were sealed, trapping us, and toxic gas was pumped into the room through the ventilation ducts. While Ensign LaQua worked on the translators, I was ordered by Captain Wolfe to attempt to plug the vents while he tried to open the door. I improvised a method of blocking the vents using bandages from an emergency medical kit, but picked up an injury in the process. Ensign LaQua succeeded in disrupting communications, and Captain Wolfe abandoned efforts to open the door, since security forces had been dispatched to our location. Instead we made our escape into the station's Jefferies tubes. I was forced to utilise emergency painkillers in order to continue and not jeapordise the mission.

After a lengthy climb, we found ourselves at the command module where LoDona-loyal Fifth Columnists were in a protracted firefight with U'Gaeth's forces, having tipped their hand. Pinned down by phaser fire, we joined the battle - until I spotted U'Gaeth attempting to escape to a turbolift. Assisted by a Fifth Columnist, I was able to stun him and bring him to cover.

Upon reviving him, Captain U'Gaeth was initially hostile and refused to co-operate. However, once he was shown proof of Doenitz's crimes against sentience, he was quickly pacified. At this point, I became aware of the price that my plan had exacted – we had taken the station with a minimum of bloodshed, but U'Gaeth's will was utterly, perhaps irrevocably, broken.

There, the stress of the mission and the pain of my injury quickly overwhelmed me and I passed out. I also learned that the Champlain had been involved in a protracted stand-off with the Doenitz-loyal [[USS Wyvern]]. However, details of this encounter remain unknown to me at this juncture.
