Carl "Babe" Deston - so nicknamed both for his diminutive stature, and the "dreamy" look he gets when lost in thought (which is all too often) - grew up on Proxima, one of Earth's first colony worlds. Proxima serves the Proxima Maintenence yards, and Carl grew up in the primary city serving the yards, Virginia City. Almost everyone in Virginia City is in Starfleet, is associated with Starfleet, or works in the many support and infrastructure services necessary to keeping the city running. Carl spent a lot of time with family members on their jobs - all of them are technicians of some sort or other, from emergency medical to special electronics. He also ran with a crowd of neighborhood kids, getting into the sort of trouble kids are wont to get into. As he grew older, he found himself less interested in all the "doing" that everyone around him seemed to be involved in, and much more interested in learning the underlying principles behind all the specialized "to-do" knowledge that everyone did their jobs by. Carl soon fell in love with the processes and principles of scientific investigation, and eventually wrangled his way into Proxima University.
