<p>The SFMC is organized along the lines 
of previous Marine Corps, but with some distinct differences. 
Since a diverse skill base is available to even a junior 
Platoon Leader, there is no need for the specialized companies 
or divisions like the armies of old. Rather, Contingents 
are assigned where needed, and Divisions are divided along 
geographic or duty lines.<br>

<p>The Corps has roughly 995,328 of Marines in the field, with 
additional personal in support positions. Ongoing graduates 
of Academy and Paris Island training manage to meet losses 
due to retirement, discharge, or loses in the line of duty.</p>
<p><span lang="en-us"><b>Marine 
Expeditionary Force:</b> One other squad division of note is 
the Expeditionary Force. A Marine Expeditionary Force is 
composed of many different Marines from several different 
companies or regiments, put together for a specific purpose 
(Much like a Fleet Task Force). Expeditionary Forces vary in 
size and composition, depending on their specific reason for 
existence. Expeditionary Forces are named by order of their 
creation: 1st Expeditionary Force, 2nd Expeditionary Force, 
etc.</span></p>

<p>There are 14 Marine Divisions. 
Rather than specific skill base, SFMC divisions are divided 
predominantly on geographical lines. 3 are dedicated to 
defense of the Federation Core.. Vulcan and Earth, one, the 
Ambassadorial Guard has units stationed throughout the 
galaxy as well as a strong garrison on Betazed. The other 
ten are stationed on key ships, bases and garrison points 
along both the Federation's borders, and around unexplored 
areas encompassed by Federation growth.<br>

The small number of Marines spread across such a vast 
expanse, and a vast array of enemies, gave birth to the 
Corps' nickname, &quot;The Thin Green Line&quot;
