The verteron array was a system based on Mars, designed to redirect comets in the Sol System via verteron pulses towards Mars for the purposes of terraforming the planet. It was taken over in 2155 by the xenophobic group Terra Prime, who used it to fire upon Luna, demanding that all non-humans were to evacuate the Sol System, and threatening to destroy Earth's Starfleet Command Complex in San Francisco if their demands were not met. When the Enterprise attempted to thwart Terra Prime's efforts, the ship was attacked by the array, which caused heavy damage. The shot was merely a warning, however, as the verteron array could have destroyed them. Terra Prime was foiled by Captain Jonathan Archer and his chief engineer Commander Trip Tucker. Although the weapon fired, it missed its target and hit the Pacific Ocean. (ENT: "Demons", "Terra Prime")
