While working as a mechanic to pay for his tuition in a regular university, Norm found that a slip of his hand could lead to a serious accident. He ended up trapped under his heavy equipment after a slight explosion, and crushed both his left lung and leg. His lung was fixable and it rarely gives him trouble, but the knee had been shattered. He walks with a limp caused by the awkward movement of a cybernetic knee.

A man who hates the sound of his own name outside of formal occasions, he introduces himself as simpley 'Norm'. Norm is a tall man, standing at six feet and eight inches, which often causes a problem when entering parking garages or dealing with holiday decor. Lucky for him, however, there are no parking garages on a ship.

As a young man Norm witnessed the death of his family starting with his father and brother, Tom. Little later, after suffering a broken heart, Norm's mother also passed away. Having still been a minor, Norm went to finish his adolesent life with his best friend, Tony and his parents.

Needless to say, Norm grew up angry, spending much of his time mending the bones broken in physical brawls he managed to provoke.

But, under the anger, Norm managed to harbour a love of eningeering. As he persued his career he found himself calming back into the person he once was. He tends to wear his heart on his sleeve, but he loves to smile. Every once in a while he is attacked by a wave of depression, or memory, but he is quick to recover.
