Dieter Gregory

Physical Description

Dieter Gregory is a tall, lanky man with a runner's physique that comes from his daily workouts. Women have commented on his piercing blue eyes and his perpetual 5 o'clock shadow. His brown hair is generally scruffy and unkempt from running his hand through it on a regular basis.

Family and Background

Gregory was born in Southern England, the first of three children to Audrey and Albert Gregory. Growing up, he spent much of his time taking things apart and putting them back together, much to the chagrin of his parents and his younger siblings. Albert, an archeologist, encouraged Dieter to pursue physical activities such as camping, swimming, rowing, and those other activities a young lad was inclined to do. In school, he was an average student, excelling in math and sciences, but would often ignore those classes he felt were mundane. By the time he was 17, he had two patents to his name on improvements he had made in his tinkering.

Education

With his excellent marks, Gregory headed off to the US to attend college at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he earned a degree in Quantum Mechanics and a minor in Mechanical Engineering. He earned a scholarship to spend 6 months studying at the Daystrom Institute, the research becoming the basis of his Honors Thesis 'Effects of tachyon tradition on dilithium degeneration at sub warp speeds.'

His mentor at MIT, a retired Star Fleet Chief Engineer, encouraged Gregory to consider Star Fleet rather than going into the private sector. He was recruited by Star Fleet and entered the academy where he excelled in Engineering and Operations coursework. After advanced training in these fields, he entered the fleet.

Medical History

Gregory has assorted broken bones (healed) and scars from his youthful adventures. He has a healthy distaste for psychiatry as he dislikes talking about his feelings. He tries to avoid telepaths where he can, as he feels his thoughts are his own.

Hobbies and Off-duty Activities

Gregory always starts the morning off with a run, usually 3 to 5 km. He likes to free-climb and his goal is to climb a peak on every plant he visits. He keeps the skills up in the holodeck.

Gregory from his crew days

As a young man, he was on the MIT crew team, and tries to keep up rowing when he can.

Recently he has taken to training with the Security NCOs at 0600. While he continues to excel at distance running, he is honing his hand-to-hand combat skills and is often used as the training 'dummy' for the NCOs during the morning training.

Quirks

While a fan of many different foods, he has a habit of always having ploughman's lunch. If asked, he'll say it is to remind him of home

Gregory's lunch

Gregory loves to gamble. It's not an addiction, rather a way for him to test his skills against others. He also likes games of chance like Dabo, as the randomness reminds him of the quantum world.

Gregory is also a bit of a playboy and has shown no signs of settling down. He is agnostic when it comes to his bed partners.

SPOTS

Gregory has been developing plans to build a system to improve efficiency on Starships. He calls this system SPOTS, short for Specialized Portable Operations Troubleshooting System.

SPOTS Conceptual design

SPOTS is a small, mobile system that is designed to help Operations and Engineering to identify, isolate, and diagnose issues when they arise. The small size of SPOTS allows it to enter smaller spaces faster, and the improved sensor system and feedback can identify areas of concern.
