A synaptic stimulator is a small device that can access a person's nervous system.

In 2373, the USS Voyager crew used a synaptic stimulator to remove Tieran's consciousness from Ameron, where he had hid after inhabiting Kes' body. The stimulator worked by tapping into a cortical implant necessary for Tieran to transfer his neural pattern, but was only effective when applied directly to the skin. (VOY: "Warlord")

The Ponea created a synaptic stimulator that is worn behind a person's ear. It is a neural interface that taps into the user's visual cortex and displays various alien vistas. It is unable to simulate people.

After being stranded in the Delta Quadrant in 2371, the crew of the USS Equinox obtained this device from the Ponea and it became one of the few forms of entertainment they had. Marla Gilmore introduced the device to Chakotay and Harry Kim of the USS Voyager amongst a list of supplies, describing it as "a poor man's holodeck."

Captain Rudolph Ransom often used the synaptic stimulator to escape from his troubles. He chose to spend the last few moments of his life wearing the device. (VOY: "Equinox", "Equinox, Part II").

The Akritirian clamp is also a type of synaptic stimulator. (VOY: "The Chute")
