Matthew was born the middle child of three to Heather Brownlee and a Vulcan man named Arev. He was born while his mother was on business in the Earth city of Athens on December 11, 2357.
After her business trip, Heather returned to the family home in ShirKahr, on Vulcan. His father, Arev, was stationed at the shipyards there. However, in 2364, he was stationed aboard the USS Hamilton (NCC-61452), and the family of now five moved on board with him. After moving around from ship to ship, Arev was stationed on the USS Utica (NCC-74361) in 2372, where he stayed until the conclusion of the Dominion War. It was at this time that Matthew applied to Starfleet Academy.
