The area is generally considered a navigational hazard due to a large number of asteroids in that region containing high concentrations of magnesite ore. this concentration of Ore made it diffuclt to navigate through the debris field as Navigational sensors were ineffective. It was rumored that only a very accurate chart or a very good pilot with first hand knowledge of the region could navigate through the area successfully.

During the Cardassian- Federation war, Chance Raschen commanded an Irregular Federation Forces vessel in this sector of space. He would often utilize this area as a hiding place and as a way to sucker in unsuspecting Cardassian warships. The area is very close to the Bardon Alpha mining interest.

In 2408, the USS Rosenante was forced to take refuge inside the Mill after being unjustly accused of attacking the Bardon Alpha facility. The USS Furious commanded by Captain Saleke mistook her for the culprit of the attack since the vessel had been named by station defenders. In actuality the attacker was a Mirror Universe Vessel named the ISS Rosenante.
