| The Advanced theoretical Technologies unit was formed in 2304 by Starfleet Command's Engineering Branch. The unit consists of a select number of starfleet engineers that show exceptional design and deductive reasoning skills. They are mandated to continue to push the forward envelope of Technology already in use by the federation, without the same bureaucratic limitations placed upon the Engineers responsible for maintaining and advancing the bulk of Starfleet Technology.
