{{quote|Zach leaned forward and quirked one of his fingers, to bring Vanyssa in closer. Once she was close, he spoke quietly. "Power, Captain, is not all that it seems. Power is very real, tangible in many cases. It has been said that power corrupts, and from a philosophical standpoint that might be correct. But if history has shown anything, it's that a mad-man can push the price off on others long enough to destroy all we hold dear. And in the end, Captain, in the end... when the leader is finally called to account..." he sat back again. "Then the price has already been paid with the blood of the innocent."|Zachary Falthgood to Captain Vanyssa Winters}}

Zachary 'Shades' Falthgood leads a double life. He's a Captain and Special Aide to Admiral LoDona, but keeps that fact hidden and continues to serve as a Research Scientist and Lieutenant aboard the USS Nimitz.

</table>'Shades' is one of my three favorite characters of all time. I created him with the mood of Cochrane Research Facility (The T'Kon station, before she moved to a ship) in mind. He started out simply enough, a real goof-ball with a love of history, an even bigger love of his antique-shades, and a real penchant for making things difficult on people. He was goofy, he was nutty… he was fun to play. He fit -right- in on Cochrane. Then Cochrane became a ship, rather then a research facility based on old technology... and I moved him to the Nimitz for a couple other missions.

He became rather more after the Burial Grounds missions on the Nimitz (See [[The Sevant Murders]]). Suddenly, there was more then a reason he was so goofy, and that his history was so twisted. He became a former enemy agent, before Doenitz –was- the enemy. That mission, Burial Grounds, forced me to write dozens upon dozens of pages of back history for him, stuff that mostly has never seen the light of day except in dribs and drabs as the Civil War continues. A lot of that history will remain locked away in one of my folders, a lot of it coming to light would ruin half the plotlines I’ve got created fleet-wide.. so I’ll fully update him as I go.

As usual, watch for authors notes. I have this… feeling… that there will be many on Zach. *chuckles*

Zachary's parents were both Scientists at Harvard University, which is where he gets his skill at science from. From the time he was ten he was attending functions with his parents at Harvard. Though not a genius, he is exceptionally bright in regards to science and engineering and took to 'inventing' things to show his parents and to show at science fairs. As his schooling was sometimes to slow to please him, he took to tearing apart items to learn how they worked and applying that knowledge to what he wanted to build. As the years went on, he kept up that style of learning and became adept at tearing apart other people’s creations to learn how they worked, or to improve upon them. It got him in trouble a few times, but on the whole it helped him through college and Starfleet Academy.
