A portable electronic microscope was a piece of 23rd century medical technology designed for use in microbiological study of microorganisms and viruses.
In 2266, Leonard McCoy used such an instrument to study the viruses of the life prolongation complex developed on Miri's homeworld. (TOS: "Miri")
