Although Grant had never left Oklahoma his father was a very famous civilian engineer and was constantly traveling. Because of his father being a prominent engineer, Grant was surrounded by machines, computers and gizmos since he was a child. Because of that he gained a good understanding and knowledge of engineering. When he was 16 he had decided that he was going to become a starfleet engineer as he was very curious on what the stars held, and he was fascinated by star ships.
