Upon his arrival, he was immediately plunged into the war, a war he was surprised to learn was fought with swords and other assorted melee weapons to cut down on casualties, a decision made after a history of more than a hundred years of constant war with outsiders. James spent several years helping the Dragon Knights fight the Great War on Dacoral. He eventually fell in love with a starfleet officer attached to the federation embassy on Dacoral, a Betazoid by the name of Emily North. From her he learned the fine art of tactics, and by this time was already a battle proven warrior. He achieved the rank of captain in the Dragon Knights, becoming the famed units First officer.
