Matthew is the oldest of 7 Children, and the first and only to enter Starfleet. His parents were civilian scientists. He entered Starfleet Academy at the age of 18 to get away from the Science world. But it just seemed to drag him back in.

Matthew's first duty station was the USS Alacrity under Captain JT Talasario. When the Civil War started, Matthew as well as the Alacrity was on the Doenitz side of the war. He started out in the tactical department. When Captain Talasario and the Alacrity defected to the 52nd fleet, Matthew was among the officers that defected.

When Talasario took command of the science ship USS Humboldt, Matthew went with him, but due to his experience with science was moved over to the science department as a Lt. JG and ACSO.
