Pergium is a mineral important in transtator technology. [[Janus VI]], homeworld of the rock dwelling race of the Horta, is the only known naturally ocurring source of this mineral. Though it can be synthesized or fabricated, it is less expensive to mine. Janus VI is a world which is a treasure trove of minerals and metallic ores, well able to sustain the Horta race and support the human mining colony for many hundreds, if not thousands, of years.

Pergium is a radioactive element used for power in 23rd century nuclear reactors such as the PXK. Pergium is used by thousands of worlds as a source of energy. One key source of pergium is the planet Janus VI, where it is mined by a Federation colony in conjunction with the Horta. (TOS: "The Devil in the Dark")
