A thoron generator was a Starfleet medical tool that the Maquis found effective for blocking Federation tricorder scans.
Lon Suder attempted to use a thoron generator to fool the Kazon that had commandeered the USS Voyager in 2372. Seska, an ex-Maquis, saw through the ruse. (VOY: "Basics, Part II")
