Early Life
Ulia Mason was born on the Utopia Planetia Colony on Mars, but didn't stay long there. After her father died, when Mason was 6, her mother, an exobotanist, moved from place to place regularly. Ulia's mother seemed dependant on male companionship and would do everything she could to be engaged in a relationship... often with disasterous results. The first instance of child abuse directed at Ulia took place when she was 8 years old. From this time, Ulia turned her rage inwards, working to be the best at what she was. She also grew more and more distant from the people around her, not caring what they felt or thought as long as they left her alone.
Starfleet Academy
Despite problems with her psychological profile, Mason did well at the Academy and in Command School. Her shortness with other officers was often cited, as was her abrupt nature, however no one could dispute her competence. Mason made few friends in the Academy and didn't seem to care. Never bonding with any of her classmates or instructors, Mason continued to lead a solitary life but achieving high grades. The Academy ordered her to mandatory counselling which she endured but never 'gave in' to. The result was a competent officer still harbouring resentment towards her fellow officers. Ulia found she enjoyed military discipline and the aura of military mystique around things. This made her situation easier to bear as routine was something she flourished in.
