Pre-Starfleet History

Rellam was born on Trill, in the city of Tentar. His parents were Nissa and Morvan Tam. Both of his parents are involved in Trill politics, Morvan working as a political strategist for various people in the government and Nissa a science and technology advisor for the legislative branch of the government. He is an only child, and was raised in a loving house hold. As he grew up, he took a liking to many sports, most of them speed and agility related, and always had a desire to join the Marines. Rellam wasn't necessarily an out going child or teen, but he was friendly enough. When the time came his parents supported his joining the Marines, although they were somewhat confused at his desire to enlist instead of going to the academy, but they didn't fight him on it.

Boot Camp and Other Training

At boot camp, Rellam held his own, not being the most aggressive, but showing more restraint the forethought than most. Rellam was loud when required, but was generally the quietest of his group. He listened well, and very rarely got in any trouble unless the DIs were looking to prove something. The one area in which he excelled was marksmanship. Rellam proved to be as near a natural as anyone could be, and scored a perfect score on his marksman test to pass out of boot camp. The combination of his skill with a rifle and his temperament, caused his DIs to strongly recommend that he proceed to Sniper training school after boot camp. Rellam took their advice and excelled in the school, the subdued nature and the need for clear thinking and patience were the perfect fit. He graduated first in his class, earning the top sharpshooter and marksman rating with all the personal weapons in the marines arsenal.

Service History

Once out of sniper school Rellam was assigned as the sniper half of a sniper/scout pair attached to one of the deep recon squads (The Black Ice), attached to a Company in the 9th Izar division (9th Izar Division, 2nd regiment, 4th Battalion, 1st Reconnaissance Company, Gamma Platoon, 1st Squad, "The Black Ice"). He spent 5 years with the Black Ice squad, all of them with the same spotter. The first four years were rather uneventful, they carried out a variety of scouting missions, and the squad grew into a very close knit family. During the fifth year, however, things heated up for the 2nd regiment of the division. Skirmishes on the border with the Breen became more heated and more frequent, and incidents with various other races from more unexplored areas in their territories became an issue. Rellam's platoon, and his squad in particular4, were called on to penetrate and secure enemy help positions until units from the second and third Companies in the 4th battalion would arrive to establish a more permanent presence, at which point his platoon would be moved to a different area. His platoon became known as a unit that could accomplish just about any hazardous mission given to them, and Rellam's squad played a key roll in this, dropping before the rest of a platoon to take out certain vital enemy targets prior to the main force of the platoon coming down. As the reputation spread, the platoon was sent on more and more dangerous missions. The last mission of his went on with the Black Ice went badly. They were dropped ahead of the rest of the platoon, their mission was to proceed into the target, report back on troop strength and then provide overwatch and skirmish and sniper support for the platoon once it moved on the target. Once they landed, Rellam and his spotter immediately went to ground, moving away from the rest of the squad, to find a good vantage point from which to provide cover fire. The squad had been on the ground for less than an hour when the Rellam's comm lit up with the sounds of gun fire coming from the main contingent of the squad. The intel they had received had been faulty, the main edge main squad had run into a patrol much farther out than they had been expecting, and they had been much better armed. Rellam and his spotter broke cover and made their way back to the squad. The Squad leader requested that Rellam inform the platoon that they were going to need immediate extraction, they were told to hold what they could, and that the full platoon would drop on their heads. Rellam and his spotter made it back to the rest of the squad, which had managed to repel the patrol and had fallen back to a slightly more secure position. Three members of the squad were dead, including the squad leader, and another was critically hurt. As the Platoons drop ships were inbound, the enemy sent another patrol against Rellam's squad. Rellam managed to take out a number of the enemy patrol before they hit the squad with a mortar round. The last thing Rellam heard was the drop ships landing around him before he lost consciousness.

Rellam was the only surviving member of the squad, and that was due only to the fact that he had taken up a position on the edge of the area the squad was holding. He had been critically injured, and took two months to recover and rehabilitate. This is when the sadness began to set in, he had grown very close to the rest of the squad, especially his spotter. He requested to be put back into an active unit as soon as he was medically fit, although the Psychs recommended that he be transferred to a different division, hoping that a change of theater would keep him from dwelling on his former squad. He was transferred to the 8th Ivor Division, as part of an rapid response company (the third Company of the 6th Regiment), and placed in an experienced Squad called the "Red Dawn". He spent the next three years with the squad, again growing close to him. The Squad leader had explained Rellam's situation prior to his arrival. The squad understood what Rellam was going through and never asked a single question about his past, they simply accepted him. At the end of his three years he was captured by Romulans, his spotter was killed, and he was held prisoner for a year, under the guise of committing crimes against the RSE, before finally being rescued. Rellam won't talk about his time in captivity, other than to say that he didn't talk and that his spotter was executed at the very beginning of the ordeal, both of which are true. There were signs of abuse and trauma to Rellam’s body, but when someone brings it up, he simply changes the subject, or shuts down, he doesn’t get angry about it, he simply doesn’t talk about it.

It was determined that it would be best to keep him out of combat situations for awhile, but he refused to accept an honorable discharge of any form, and the change in his personality wasn’t depression, and it wasn’t effecting his abilities they didn’t feel right forcing him out, especially as he is one of the Corps best snipers. They decided to transfer him into 4th Ambassadorial Guard, first placing him on Betazed for training, then was transferred to various embassies around the Federation, then finally transferring him to the Federation Embassy on Quo’nos, were he spent a good 5 years.

After a tour with the Ambassadorial Guard, he requested, and was approved for, a transfer to a ship side company, being transferred into the 52nd Fleet just prior to it heading deep into the beta quadrant.

Medical/Psycological Information

Rellam Tam is in good physical health, although his body shows the signs of past physical abuse from being tortured, but he has never once complained about them or told anyone where they came from. His personality, as noted in his service record, has taken a turn towards introversion. He is extremely queit and isolated. This hasn't affected his work as a sniper, a fairly lonely job, and he doesn't let his attitude effect his work. He is however, much quieter than the average enlisted Marine. There is a hardness as well as a sadness in his eyes, and he has been known to isolate himself. The loss of his the "Black Ice" Squad, as well as his Spotter from the "Red Dawn" and the time in Romulan custody, has caused Rellam to become quieter than ever, spending more time training, and practicing, and in the barracks, than before. He is hard working, tireless, and loyal to a fault, but near silent when not on a mission or his input or opinion is not needed.

Skills

Rellam is a master sniper, and has achieved the highest level of marksmenship on all personal weapons the Marines use, as well as the Angel MkII. Rellam has received counter sniper training as well as counter-terrorist training. Well versed in Wilderness Survival, he is able to survive when cut off from his unit and other sources of supplies. As a sniper he received advanced SERE (Survive, Evade, Resist, Escape) training. His sniper training also included training in information gathering.
