The renegotiation of the [[Treaty of Algeron]] did not had the expected results Vrih hoped. The Romulan military condemned the Treaty as soon as it was signed, considering the concession made far too accommodating. The military getting some support among senators, the Senate soon become itself divided between those who agreed with the treaty and those who did not. In fact, the division was mostly between those who considered the Romulan Empire still weak, following Shinzon coup d'etat, and preferred peace, and those who considered that thirty years of rebuilding was more than enough, and argued that the Romulan Empire should favor a more aggressive foreign policy.
Following several months of political debates, the Senate finally united behind the leadership of Senator Severan, an ex captain who had a tremendous military record during the Dominion War, and who had become since senator. [[Severan]] represented a much tougher position than Vrih and was closer to the military, but at the same time, his leadership, political skills and values being moderate, he was able to convince several senators on Vrih side to his cause. At the end, within one year, Vrih had lost the support of the Senate and he was replaced by Severan as Praetor.

Praetor Vrih in 2406

Praetor Vrih assumed control of the Romulan Star Empire in early 2406 and set about consolidating his power in the Romulan Senate.

He found himself in opposition to Senator Terrah who through his long senatorial history was a proponent of hostilities with the United Federation of Planets, a position that Vrih opposed.

In 2406, Vrih made peaceful overatures to the UFP bu inviting the USS Hades, a Prometheus Class starship, to visit Romulus.

The Hades' mission was to convey ambassador Jericho Nolan from Starbase 989 to Romulus to renegotiate the Treaty of Algeron, which had been discarded by the Doenitz loyalists during the Federation Civil War. This treaty, among other things, regulated the Federation's use of Cloaking Technology.

Disaster struck mid-way to Romulus when an evironmental subsystem exploded, seriously injuring Captain Devan Sash and killing Ambassador Nolan. Despite this serious setback, the mission moved forward and the hades arrived at Romulus without any further difficulty.

The peace talks, however, were anything but difficulty free. Terrah, along with his apparent allies, put into place a plot to overthrow Vrih and make himself Praetor.

An assassination attempt on the praetor was pinned on members of the federation away team and Terrah moved to convince the Continuing Committee that he should be placed in charge of the Empire as the praetor and both Proconsuls were also missing.

The plan almost worked, had it not been for the timely intervention of Chairman Vaebn, Praetor Vrih and members of the Hades crew.

Terrah was killed and the praetor retained his position of power. The renegotiated Treaty of Algeron was ratified in mid-2406.
